So I've had Abby since the end of July. About four of five times since I've had her she had made a choking, gagging sound, like she's going to cough up a hairball but never does. The cat I had before had a number of health issues and threw up often, so this new territory for me. She is active (really, really active) and shows no other symptoms. Is this something to be concerned about?

I have a cat that does this every now and then, and I think he's just got something got in his throat.  It usually happens when he's eaten a "shredded" food vs pate.  Could that be the issue?  Or it's possible she really does have a hairball that isn't ready to come up.

As long as she continues to act normally otherwise, and the gagging doesn't get any more often, I would think she's ok.  If you have any doubts at all though, simply put in a call to your Vet.

My cat does a slight gag that seems like a burp, more than anything after he eats sometimes.

The shredded food thing might be the culprit! I'd also watch how she eats, especially if she eats too fast and try to slow her down.

Well, it’s definitely not shredded food because she doesn’t get any. I have decided I will never give her any other wet food but pate. My previous cat wouldn’t eat pate, she would only lick the gravy from the chunky or shredded stuff and would otherwise only eat dry food. Since Abby eats the pate and is eating a bit more as time goes by (from barely a quarter of a 5 oz. can to a third and sometimes a half) I don’t want to risk her developing any kind of preference for the gravy only - or I will have to rely on the dry food to make sure she eats enough. She is also a rather slow eater, one of the few things she does slowly. So I might just fire off an email to my vet - the clinic was always good about giving me an answer while Bailey was sick. It is just so intermittent and apparently random though, but maybe they will have an idea. Thanks.
