So a day into into my cat being a new mum I noticed a rash, I thought perhaps the kitten were scratching her tummy, now it's day three/four and it's oozy, wet, sore, hot and obviously causing her a lot of distress.

I thought perhaps it was a hot spot but a woman who runs an even bigger shelter where I live said it looks like ringworm - please please someone tell me it doesn't look like ringworm. It's not dry and flakey like ringworm usually is, though the marking definitely looks like it.

I don't want my newborns to get it - in our shelter we have had so much trouble with it, not to mention I'm currently pregnant.

That looks a bit large for a ringworm lesion. Poor baby! Do you have a black light you can shine on it to see if it glows solid? That's the quickest way of figuring it out.

That's rather unusual. I'm asking catwoman707 catwoman707 and stephenq stephenq what they think about this.

You need to plan to get her to the vet in the morning. Babies can stay home.

In the meantime I would suggest a warm compress.

It looks very painful.

Yes it does look painful, and from what I can tell from the pic, does not appear to be ringworm, however I can't identify what has caused this.

One thing that will help eliminate the possibility of it being ringworm is, the sore area, is there any fur on it at all or is it completely gone?

Do not judge this lesion by it's shape, I don't think it's ringworm at all. Too odd of a place on her body, too large, no other spots anywhere, and it's wet.

All of these tell me it's not.

She most definitely does need to get this looked at, it may even be a hot spot for some reason, and continues to irritate due to nursing.

Yes I bet it's a hot spot. These are usually on tummies of a cat, unlike dogs, and are wet and sore and irritated.

Hi

I agree it doesn't look like ringworm but something bad is going on, and it needs a vets attention.  Skin issues are hard to diagnose, there is about a 300 page book devoted just to animal skin issues, so we can't diagnose it.  But infection often is a component of skin issues, and she needs a vet to help.

Hey all - I couldn't thank you enough for the quick replies. I agree, after hearing from you all and also noticing it's grown in size it definitly looks like some kind of infection.

We're off to the vets in 15 minutes, kittens and mother (it's only 1:45pm here) and for the fee I may as well have the kittens checked out too.

I'll keep you updated - again, thank you so much.

Ah! Just checked your profile and saw that you're in Australia. That's great, as the vet can begin treatment right away. Poor mama needs relief.

Let us know what the vet says and what he prescribes.

Alrighty! The trip to the vet went smoothly, she was completely relaxed and friendly throughout the whole ordeal - The vet ruled out ringworm thank god, though believes it's a nasty infection started by a skin irritation from the kittens suckling.
She's been put on a round of antibiotics as she also had a small temp and topical neocort cream - has also been given a cortisone injection to help with the irritation.

Thank you so much for the advice and help :D
