Hi

Please HELP  . . . both of my 2 year old kittens became constipated about 3 weeks ago.  I was feeding them dry cat food and wet canned food left in the bowl for them to eat whenever.  I consider both foods good quality foods Halo for Indoor cat dry and Wellness wet turkey, and fresh water.  I removed the dry food hoping this would cure the situation.  It didn't, so I started giving them Miralax an 1/8th teaspoon a day and then added water to theri wet food; this seemed to help. Exit is now pooping daily, his poop is a little soft but not runny.  Freeway is pooping every other day or every two days.  When he poops its a much smaller quantity and is very soft and he seems to be uncomfortable. BTW the poop color is dark brown a little darker than it was when they were pooping consitantly. I took them to the SPCA emergency vet clinic, a week after I noticed they were constipated.  The assistant vet felt both their tummies, took their temps and said they didn't feel any blocks and advised me to continue with the Miralax up it to 2 times a day and continue to add water to the wet food.  That was two weeks ago, now its week three both are pooping more consistently but the problem is not resolved.  BTW the weather here is very hot 85.  Wondering if this has anything to do with the situation.

I feel the vet really didn't do much to help and I am also concerned about continuing to give them Miralax since now their poop is a little on the too soft side.  Any recommendations?  I want to discontinue the Miralax for Exit who is now pooping consistently.  I'm not sure what to do for Freeway who is pooping every other day or every two days.  This is really not normal for him.  He used to poop daily . . .  big poops with ease.  I am really concerned for him and not sure what to do. APOLOGIES FOR BEING SO GRAPHIC:( but I need help and must be graphic to convey the situation as it is.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Worried mom :((((((

I saw your post and I wish you the best of luck, but I have nothing constructive to contribute.

Try cutting back on the dry food and feed them a good serving of wet food with plain canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) twice a day.  Also, add water to the wet food/pumpkin combination so it's about the consistency of thick oatmeal.  Switch to a grain-free dry kibble, if you're not already feeding that.  I'm not familiar with Halo, but I know that Wellness CORE is a good GF dry food.

Adding water to their wet food not only increases their water intake, it helps soften the stool allowing it to pass more easily.

Hi Advisor,

Thanks for responding.  I stopped giving them dry food two weeks ago.  I also tried pumpkin and was told by the vets assistant to stop the pumpkin as it adds bulk to the poop, that was when their poop was hard but now that it is too soft a little pumpkin might set things right.  I will do that for Exit but not sure about adding pumpkin to Freeway's meal as he is only pooping every two days.

Maybe I will add a little to his meal and see if it makes a difference.

Things are a little complex at the moment.

I so appreciate your feedback . . . . it really means LOTS and Freeway & Exit appreciate it.

I'm so happy to report that Freeway and Exit pooped yesterday.  And the poops were not hard and not too soft, about 85% normal.  Whew  . . .  I am sooo glad they are on the mend.

They were very playful and energetic last night when I got home from work.  Yay!  I am so relieved and happy for them.

For the time being I am feeding them Wellness Turkey wet food and Evo Pro wet food in separate bowls of course with lots of water added to both.

Thanks for your support.

Woohoo!  Yay for some more normal poops!!

Pumpkin is rich in fiber and that will help soften the stool and pass easily as well as help them stay regular.  All my kitties get a little bit of pumpkin to keep them moving.  After their tummies calm down, you could probably reintroduce dry food, but at a much reduced amount.  I feed my kitties wet food twice a day with dry food kibble "snacks" a couple of times a day.  Each "snack" is about 10 crunchies.  LOL

Yes pumpkin is sooo good :)  I think I'm going to refrain from feeding them dry food . . .  I will only re introduce it when they are totally better.  I hope that will be soon.

I'm seeing progress but they have a little way

thanks!
