When I got my new kitten, Mooni, from the local animal shelter, she was just coming down with an upper respiratory infection so common to kennel occupants. At four weeks of age, I was concerned not knowing if she had received colostrum or had a strong immune system, but in a couple of weeks she had pepped up, lost most of the snots and sneezes, and went into high gear.

At eleven weeks, Mooni still has a minor dark discharge from her eyes and a noticeable dark dry discharge around her little nostrils and is somewhat congested in the mornings (who of us aren't?-especially those of us who are allergic to cats)  that passes as the day progresses.

I am not at liberty to post images quite yet as a newby, but you can see the discharge on her face in my avatar. She is a fireball, full of energy and kinetic motion, so I don't think there is anything serious going on, but if nothing else, the discharge mars my many photos I like to make of my cats.

Any ideas?

It's possible that she has a minor residual infection in her eyes from the URI and may benefit from either an anti-viral or anti-bacterial eye cream or drops.  If her URI was feline herpes, very common, it can be chronic and/or recurring so adding a pinch of l-lysine in her diet every day (for life) could also help.  See: https://www.vetinfo.com/controlling-cat-herpes-l-lysine.html

You can also gently clean her eyes with a moist cotton ball.

Looks like cat boogers to me
I wouldn't worry about it. You can clean it off with a damp tissue. If the cat seems congested then you should take the cat to the vet for a check up. It may be a respiratory infection which is treatable.

Thanks for the help. It may also be that nasty cat litter, Fresh Step, that has such a gross, heavy lavender scent. The only reason that I am using it is because I found it while cleaning out my father's estate and it was a brand new 42 lb bag. Ugh, that stuff is nasty...and if it bothers me that much, it may bother her, too. She reeks of it when she uses the box and then I get it on my hands and it seems everywhere.

Cats have super sensitive noses. Stuff that smells good to us may be really irritating to a cat. Unscented cat litter is best to use unless you want a cat to go on the floor as protest for a "stinky" (ie perfumed) litter box.

I have a very sensitive sense of smell, too. Unscented products are always preferred. I'm only using it because I couldn't pass up 42lbs of free cat litter. I may just toss the rest and get something less aromatic. Bleah!

I do like the clumping stuff, though. Another container I found in the house was an unscented clumping litter...I've always used cheapo Johnny Cat because it's pure bentonite clay which I use in koi keeping, but it was nice to be able to dig out the urine clumps as well as the tootsie-rolls.

I can't wait until Mooni gets old enough to go outside to poo. As soon as she is able to hold it all night, inside...out goes the litterbox! It's like having all your kids finally being old enough to forgo the diapers.
