Hello everyone,

Today I noticed that the back of my cat's ears look quite bald, there's still some hair there but they look rather "thin" of hair.
Months ago (could be even a year now, I'm not sure) I noticed that one of her ears had two little balding spots, in one of our visits to the vet I asked him and he said nothing seemed to be wrong, those little bald spots had remained the same or so I thought until today.
She's almost 11 years old and she is Siamese looking (not a pure-breed), I wonder if her age or breed ancestry could have something to do with this.
As extra information I've been giving her L-lysine for about a month to help her with recurrent respiratory infections, I don't know if that's relevant.
I've seen her scratching her ears which I know could be the cause but she doesn't do it often so, I don't know. Today I gave her a bath just in case she may have fleas and I hadn't noticed.

Here are some photos:

I hope you can help me out here.

Could be an allergy to something. Do you use a monthly flea preventative such as Revolution or Advtange? Some cats may have an allergic reaction to those. Even things you wouldn't expect to cause a reaction may. My Aby apparently has an allergy to CET seafood flavored toothpaste - his left ear went bald for a few days until I was able to find poulry flavored toothpaste.

Can you go a week without giving the L-lysine just to see if that is causing the balding ear? If there's no change, then keep looking. Sometimes a food sensitivity / allergy can cause balding. What do you feed your cat?

Thanks a lot for your reply! I don't use flea preventatives on her and I can't think of something specific that may have caused this possible allergy...
I've been feeding her for years dry food by Purina's Cat Chow and she's never showed any negative reaction to it. Since I started giving her the L-lysine I've been mixing it with a bit of wet food by Whiskas, I'm guessing that an allergy to that would have appeared on the first days and not this late? I ran out of her usual dry food and had to feed her dry food by Whiskas for a few days, could it be that? This wouldn't be the first time she eats that though.  I know I could feed her better stuff but right now that's what I can afford.

That's pretty much all she eats; when we eat chicken or eggs (scrambled) she will ask for some and we give her just a little bit and she's never shown negative reactions to that.

I'm guessing that whatever it is that is causing this problem probably happened/started quite recently cause I really can't believe I hadn't noticed before! Her ears where never particularly hairy but they are definitely balding now. I guess I can try not giving her the L-lysine for a week to see if there's any difference.
