Hi everyone. I got my female spayed yesterday and Im concerned about the amount of medicine I received. I received a 'broad spectrum bactericidal 'pill to administer for 6 days and a pink cream (which name I don't know - I got it in a small jar with no label). I was told to pat the wound with iodine and then apply the cream but she was crying and running away when I applied it. Right now she is too scared to stay near me and backs away. Ive read on several forums that you should let the wound heal by itself and Im confused what to do next. As for the bactericide, I don't want to have to administer it to her by force - she is in pain. She doesn't even want to eat anything if I were to mix the pill with food. Now I wonder if this amount of medicine is necessary? I live in Colombia, and I don't speak Spanish should I ask a vet. Person who took her to fix her is now gone on a trip so I can't seek help. Im really concerned.

Because you are in Columbia, it's possible that the vet's aseptic technique leaves something to be desired?  Normally antibiotics are not needed after a routine spay, and I mistrust any vet who wants to give them, because to me that's tantamount to saying, I'm not certain my instruments and technique are clean.

The same, I think, goes for putting anything on the spay site.  I would hold off on the iodine and the pink cream for now and see if you can just get the pills in her.

I'm also wondering if due to your location, she has received insufficient pain control.  A cat should not be in pain following a spay surgery.  I would confine her to one room--makes her easier to catch and limits her activity--and do try to the get the pill into her.  If there is another vet you can contact, I would do that and see about getting her an injection for pain.  Google search engine has a translator that is not exact, but should get you close enough if you need to speak Spanish to them.

Find a fellow Ex Pat , If someone has a pet they either have an English speaking vet or can possibly go with you to translate.

Hi conejalagata and welcome to the forum !

First.....your cat NEEDS PAIN MEDICATION NOW.

I can't imagine having ovariohysterectomy surgery and not being given adequate pain control medication, can you ? It is incomprehensible.

This "Veterinarian" is practicing 18th century medicine.

There are two Veterinarians in Bogotá who are members of The American Association of Feline Practitioners: (http://www.catvets.com)

The second (#2) has advanced Veterinary training.

The Iodine burns the skin tissue....it's also painful....of course, she ran from you. Years ago, iodine was thought to be an excellent antiseptic....today, we know differently.......or, at least, some of us with a desire to learn what's new do.

And, yes, you are right, allow the incision to heal "by itself", dry.......because, it won't heal normally with a cream on top. (You are much more 'in the know' than that "Vet"!)

About pain medication for a cat: It's best to use an opiod pain med (a 'narcotic')....not a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug (those can be very dangerous to cats). Here, we use buprenorphine, Tramadol and Fenatyl patches. If you get buprenorphine, a few drops are put inside the mouth and the med is absorbed through the mouth/gum tissue - not swallowed.

See if you can find a clinic that's open asap.

Oh.....the 'bactericidal'...the antibiotic?  I would use it...God only knows how clean/sterile that surgery was/wasn't!....Tell the new Vet about it, too.
