Hello there i am new to this site and need help!!! I took in a kitten 5 days ago, i dont know how old he is but hes walking playful and vet says hes healthy, he weighs 1lb 4oz, when i got him i was feeding him nutrical c i think its called(its supposed to supplement mothers milk, he did fine on that, but then vet said to put him on wet food so i got him kitten food from pet supermarket at $2.49 a can and he wont touch it all he wants is milk, so i give him whole milk just to make sure he gets something in him, and today now when i set wet food in front of him on a saucer he just bites the plate to the point im scared hes going to crack it, i even tryed mixing milk in the wet food but all he does is lap up the milk thats not mixed in. Please help me

It is not good to give the kitten whole milk. I don't have any experience with kittens.

Sarthur2 Sarthur2 can you help with this?

No whole milk. Cats are lactose intolerant and cannot digest cow's milk. It causes them to have diarrhea.

This kitten is old enough to eat wet food. You need to buy Fancy Feast pate-style food and mix kitten formula into it to make a mush. You can also give your kitten a dish of kitten formula to drink.

You can buy KMR by PetAg at pet stores. This is the only "milk" your kitten should be drinking. Some Walmarts sell kitten milk. Only buy the powdered that you mix up.

Your kitten also needs kitten chow, and you can moisten this with KMR also.

If you offer your kitten what I have suggested he should begin eating!

Where did you get your kitten? Can you post a picture?

Thank you for the advice, I am trying to feed him royal canin loaf in sauce baby cat instinctive mother and baby cat, I also have fancy feast kitten dry food next to water, but like I said all he wants is milk and the vet said to give him wet food, but I have been seeing this kmr a lot on threads so I will try, is it expensive? ?

I got him from a friend's daughter who asked if I wanted him, something told me to save him cause they have 6 dogs and I knew he wouldn't have lasted out there, she got him from her friend

About $15 for a can at pet stores. I've seen it for $10 at my Walmart here in Florida. The biggest cans at my pet store are $25.

And this is for cans of powder that you mix up with water. A can will last you for quite awhile.

You may want to buy a kitten bottle. Your kitten still wants to nurse! Most kittens with moms nurse for quite a while, even while weaning to solids. He's adorable, but apparently isn't quite ready to wean. I'd put him on a bottle every 3-4 hours. It gives comfort too. Chewing on the plate was your kitten wanting to nurse the plate for more milk.

Let us know what you do and how he responds. I'd continue to leave the kitten chow down and offer wet food, but your boy is still a baby and he wants kitten formula in a bottle. He wants to nurse.

I'm so glad you saved him :).

PS: A kitten bottle is about a buck here.

You can also give the kitten goats milk if you have a source.  I hear it's expensive in stores.

Thanks for the help, I will be buying the supplies tomorrow, he is a handful that's for sure!! I have a big baby (aka my 2 year old pit/great Dane mix) which the kitten loves to death and sugar (dog) is very gentle with him, reminds me of milo and otitis lol, now my 7 year old female cat(who is spoiled to death) doesn't care for Punkin at all, she will tolerate until he gets close to her then she attacks, not viciously just smacks on the head, she got along with my previous cat of 18 years who I had since a kitten but I think because he was already here and she was younger, so I got my hands full lol, any other tips or suggestions, maybe how to keep him from nawing on me at night it starts soft but then he really starts biting and it hurts

He does need to learn kitten manners, so when he begins to bite on you try hissing at him. You can also gently scruff him and say "no" or hiss while scruffing. If you are consistent he will eventually learn.

He can't help it because he's a baby and he's teething, and kittens love to play, but he needs to learn from the get go. You'll be teaching him behavior for quite a few weeks!

Hopefully your 7-year-old cat will accept him eventually. Right now she's jealous and mad!

Chasing your kitten and playing with a toy on a string will help wear him out a little before bedtime. So will a nice warm bottle before bed once you get supplies. Or dish of kitten milk if he won't suck the bottle or chews it instead.

Let us know how he's doing tomorrow and any other questions you may have.

Do you have a little kitten litter box for him? He'll need one. Is he using the litter yet?

You're welcome and good luck!

I'm glad he's litter trained at least. Hopefully he'll start eating mush soon along with his KMR.

We'll look forward to an update :).

Is he only drinking KMR? If so, how much?

Have you tried the mush again or the dry food moistened with KMR?
