I'm really confused- ive never dealt with male urine blockage and am not sure what to do. I began looking after a stray cat- obviously previously owned. He's a really sweet cat. He had a supposed UTI, and was put on an antibiotic. Weeks later, he almost died one night because he was blocked. I took him to the ER vet and they put a catheter and unblocked him. They gave me prazosin to give him and pain meds. I took him to my vet two days later. This vet can be weird sometimes and maybe shady- it's hard to tell. sometimes shes good and other times not sure. She first did an x-ray to rule out stones. Then, determined he had tiny stones or crystals, which I already thought. They kept him overnight, put a catheter, fluids, antibiotic and just forgot about the prazosin. The vet was more or less trying to sell me on a crystal removing surgery maybe. b/c im going out of town I kept him in their care for boarding. When I came to see him he didn't seem happy and looked worse. Some of the vet techs are weird or handle animals not so nicely I think. There was stuff on his collar and she said she had to 'fight' him to get food in him and laughed. The secretary was really rude to me about another cat I had taken in who the vet didnt even do a thorough check up on. She is foaming at the mouth and keeps kicking her hind leg. she foams when she licks her foot. The vet barely looked at her, tried charging me 100.00 and acted as if she was ok.

The male cat who was blocked is in their care, and im wondering if they're giving him the proper care. Why was the vet trying to sell me on surgery and she seems to have no solution for any of this. What are the procedures on how to deal with a blockage- i know its catheter and iv/fluids but im not sure if they're even doing that..

*BUMPING*  I can't help you with info on blockage treatment, but I can tell you you're right to question their professionalism. If I were you, I would find a new vet asap (when you return) and never look back!

Best wishes

Sometimes they do surgery, but usually that is reserved for cats who block more than once, or who continue to have problems once they have been catheterized.  There are actually two different surgeries that can be performed.

How long has it been now that he's been in the care of your regular Vet?  Not sure I understand why you took him to her in the first place after he had already been to the ER vet and had been catheterized.  Was this for follow-up care, or did he appear to be blocked again?

I would definitely not rush to do any surgery on this guy, especially if he only has "tiny stones", BUT, your guy should be on a special food....either prescription food for crystals, or at the very minimum low phosphorus WET food only, with extra water added to it, and he needs to drink as much water as possible, always.  Did anyone discuss his diet with you? There is actually a prescription food that helps dissolve crystals.   Plus, not sure how long it's been, but he may still need the painkillers and the prozosin.

If you are not comfortable with your Vet and with the Vet techs, then you should try to find another one.  You need to be able to trust this people.  The lives of your furbabies are in their hands.
