Hello,

My cat was mis-diagnosed as seizure earlier this year. He took Keppra for two months and experienced severe constipation since the first dosing of Keppra. He pooped two days after Keppra stops. I thought everything will get back to normal but it was not.. He still experience severe constipation and now requires manual evacuation. He takes Lactulose 7-8mL per day with Cisapride. I also feed him plain yogurt. He eats homemde diet with sufficient fiber and plenty water. What else I can do to help him? I am wondering if he is having neurolgical constipation..

Thanks.

He actually might not be constipated if he's eating a high protein diet without a lot of fillers and by-products.  If he's actually using all of the good stuff in his food, there will be little waste.

The only other thing I can think of would be plain pureed pumpkin.  The good thing is that pumpkins are getting ready to come in season and you can make your own.  It's so easy.  Then you can store it in the freezer and use it as needed.

Pumpkin is a good idea, and there's even an apple fiber/pumpkin mix especially for pets (I've only seen it on Amazon). For my elderly kitty's constipation, psyllium husk powder does the trick. She's a small cat (6 lbs.) and gets 1/8 tsp. daily mixed with water and added to food (the added water is necessary for proper digestion), at least two hours away from medication or supplements.

If that doesn't work, Miralax is veterinarians' favorite OTC remedy. 1/8 tsp. daily to start, then increase to 1/4 tsp. if constipation doesn't resolve in three days.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. My cat tried sweet potato and apple before. Both didn't work very well. I will try psyllium and pumpkin asap.
The Poor little thing had manual evacuation again last night .. and bloody urine three hours later. I was terrified.. We were rushed to ER. His blood cells count was normal. Thanks god it's not hemolysis due to intravenous infusion of amoxicillin. Sono shows his bladder is fine. It seems not infection as well. Perhaps the manual evacuation was too much for him. Bad appetite this morning. He took amoxicillin to prevent infection today. I will keep an close eye on him and continue to pray.

You can use plain pureed squash (squash baby food) in place of pumpkin.  We just use pumpkin twice a day.
