Okay - I have a question.  I have 2 kittens 6 1/2 months old that I purchased from a breeder; just for beginners both kittens had worms and Giardia. I have been taking them to the vet (a very expensive proposition) and after several courses of antibiotics they have been pretty much cleaned up but... after my little boy was neutered the vet said he still had some parasites and sent me home with Tylan, he told me to sprinkle it on their food (I also have another cat). The vet didn't indicate "what" type of parasite just that he had them. At one time I was told that Tylan was nasty tasting to cats and not to sprinkle it on their food because they won't eat. Now my question, what is a good means of administering Tylan and what kind of parasites is it supposed to take care of?

I have read up on Tylan and I am aware that it's typically used for livestock and horses but I wasn't able to get a lot of info feed back is appreciated.

Can you go to a different vet for a second opinion?  I'm not familiar with Tylan so I can't help you with that.  Most vets I have used will give a topical or Strongid for hookworms and roundworms.  I would be interested to know if they ran another test to be sure the giardia has been eliminated.  I wouldn't use the Tylan until you get any other info.  Maybe you can call and ask for dosing and purpose.  When I did a brief and very quick search, it seems it's used for chronic diarrhea and some bacterial infections.

Yes, the fecal tests were direct (from the rectum) the Giardia is cleared up but loose stools or very soft stools is a norm for the kittens. I haven't given any Tylan as yet because I wanted to see feed back and I also wanted to give me kits a chance to resolve the issues themselves. I did put them on an adult diet of Merrich because it has fiber in it and I was hoping that would help. I've also been giving them probiotics but based on what I'm reading on this site the one I'm giving (from the vet) is loaded with taste good but not much else. This same vet (he's a good vet)  also had me administer Tylan to a kitten I had that was actually dying from FIP so because of that I'm wondering if Tylan to him is like asprin to me.

Whether or not you use the Tylan, a better probiotic would be a good idea. Benebac is a good one that's made for pets; or you could use one meant for humans.

I have recently been giving my cat Tylan for clostridium perfringens - it took a little while for the vet to work out the correct dosage, and I always mixed the Tylan powder with water. I then syringed it into my cat, mixing it with s. Boulardii to try and mask the very bitter taste. Willow got to the point where she didn't really mind it.

However, I do think you should get a second opinion in this case. Your vet's perscription to use the Tylan seems a bit casual for me.

Loose/soft stools is still abnormal, even for kitties at 3 months.  I think there might still be something going on even the food they're eating.  What are you feeding them?

Sorry it took so long to answer, I've been pretty busy and didn't have time to get back on line. These kitts are now 7 months and they are getting the Merrich adult cat food. I was giving them the kitten food but because of the loose stools I switched to the adult since it contains some fiber. The food they get is Salmon and has nothing more than sweet potato and peas. No fillers what so ever. My little girl and the senior cat have acceptable stools.  The senior's is on the dry side and the Snow's is formed but on the soft side. I think as they mature this will change.

I am giving probiotics to my cats, all 3 of them and I think this is making a difference. Thanks for your feed back.
