I adopted my two kitties a couple months again from the Humane Society. They claim their birth date is April 9, 2015. They were acquired by the Humane Society on or very close to May 6, 2015. They were weighed on May 7, 2015: the girl weighed 354g/12.4oz, my boy 356oz/12.5oz. They were spayed/neutered on June 16, 2015 and weighed 1,043g/2.3lbs and 1,179g/2.6lbs. I adopted them on June 23, 2015 making them nearly 11 weeks. I weighed them the next day June 24, 2015 and they only weighed (girl then boy respectively): 1,190g/2lbs10oz and 1,247g/2lbs12oz. So I figured they were younger than 11 weeks and more closer to 8 weeks. However they were severely infested with worms which could have contributed to the low weight. Well I weighed them yesterday on September 2, 2015 and they were 3,175g/7lbs and 3,401g/7lbs8oz. How old are they really? I'm more wondering how they old and if their weight is on tract for medicine and diet reasons. They don't look overweight and if you guys want pictures I can happily share them. They have had a steady but quick growth rate at about 1.5-2lbs a month. I feed them grain free, low carb wet and dry. They play with 2 other kittens that are supposedly older (according to the shelter) but are and have been smaller by 1-2lbs. I've been figuring the weight is muscle weight. However it would be nice to hear from others if they are on the right tract and how old they might actually be. My cats were listed as domestic shorthair/cross, but I suspect they are some sort of Bengal mix, not anything significant but something. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the age is correct. 1.1 and 1.2 kg for 11 weeks might be a little low, but it's not badly lower.

Your kittens are 21 weeks old - a week past five months. Healthy kitten weight is one pound for every month, so they are above a healthy weight. They may be bigger cats with bigger bone structure since they weigh around 7 pounds already. They sound healthy!

Hm I guess that makes sense. They just seemed so small when we got them and had such a hard time gaining weight when we first got them.

So they reach adulthood at a year old. I keep reading they are supposed to have as much as they want food wise up until a year. I feel like mine will become overweight if they are already 7lbs now at 5 months and they still have 7 months to go! My goal is not to feed dry at all, the dry is just kind of supplementing an additional feeding and to be honest the cost of feeding them only wet while they are kittens. My main question is when do you go from feeding them double or more because they are kittens to Xoz of food per pound?

They are supposed to eat as much as they want the first year. Just because they weigh more does not at all mean they are or will become overweight. Some cats can free feed their whole lives and never be overweight. Others need to be fed controlled amounts at certain times.

Their growth begins to slow after about six months. I have four kittens who just turned six months old. I leave dry food down 24/7, and give them wet food twice a day now. I used to give it several times a day. But, they've been healthy since day one - mom was a very healthy pregnant stray I took in, and the kittens were born and raised in my home.

So you'll need to use your good judgement. The one pound per month is a minimum guideline. Kittens weighing less are under-nourished. More is fine.

Of my four, the female and one male are smaller cats. The other two males are going to be much bigger and already are - big paws and tall. (And one of these was the runt) And all four are fixed, and their appetites slowed down after that.

Yours sound like they are doing fine :).

That's crazy to think considering they can eat so much! Especially dry food, it's gone so fast!
That's good to know. I guess if they show signs of being overweight (any of the 4) we'll change our habits.
Well my cats (described above) are both bigger than my roommate's cats who are older. My girl is even bigger than his boy sometimes at weigh ins. However his girl cat has always been the smallest. She's been growing about a pound a month, but she's a small cat. I have a feeling she'll be a small adult.
I'm glad it sounds normal. Feeding kittens/growth rate is much different than puppies for sure!

I thought I'd post an update.

I weighed them today. Comet weighs just over 8lbs. Haley is just over 7lbs. They just lost all their baby teeth in the last week. So I agree they just hit their 5 month (though I guess it's a range). But 8lbs at 5 months seems a bit much. I'm pretty sure he's not overweight. He has no loose skin or flab. Should I expect for a big boy?

Out of curiosity if this rate more common with certain breeds? After reading through the forums a bit it seems that average seems to be 8-10lbs adults, and he's already breached 8 :/

They both sound normal and healthy and will probably be bigger cats. It really is genetic and depends on bone structure and muscle mass. They do not sound fat.

Can you post pictures of them?

I didn't want you guys to think I ignored you. I really wanted pictures of them standing. I'll have to try on my day off.

Haley has spots on her belly a weird brown almost pouch like area. It's almost like extra fur. Stripes on her legs and a weird orange patch on her right side. Though my favorite features are her tufts and very light eyeshadow/eyeliner! XD

Comet has an extra long tail. I tried to show it in the second picture. He also has spots on his belly, but doesn't have extra fur like Haley. His fur is actually very different from his sister's. Sometimes I almost forget they are siblings!

Best comparison picture I could think of. Haley's legs are shorter than Comet's.
