I have 7 healthy adult cats.  Their age ranges are 3 - 8ish years.   One was a feral (the 8ish year old)  The rest have either been adopted or came from the feral as kittens.  I have always fed the cats Blue Buffalo Freedom Grain Free that is appropriate to their stage in life.  Recently I gradually switched from Blue Freedom to Authority Grain Free due to the cost of Blue.  With the switch came the urine smell that is OMG bad!!  Has anyone else who  is feeding Authority experiencing the same issue with the odor?  I change the litter boxes daily and it smells as if it has not been changed in a week.  I have switched litter 3 different times thinking that the litter brand has changed.  I have used the same litter, Fresh Step, for years until recently.  My thought is to switch back to Blue and Fresh Step and $180/month cost.  Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We've fed Authority for a couple years now and I have never noticed a strong urine odor. We switched from Blue Buffalo, too. Every now and then, we'll feed Evolve (when we are out of food and PetSmart is closed) and I haven't noticed any change then, either. Maybe one cat's body chemistry is reacting to something in the food? I don't know, just a guess.

As for litter, we use a mix of pine and clay. The pine is so good at killing odors, maybe we just don't smell the urine. It is an awesome litter combo- pine for the odor control, clay for the good clumping action.

I hope you can figure out what is causing the odor!

Thank you for the advice.  I will try mixing pine litter with clay to see if the odor calms down.

We do like the Authority brand, especially the price and the size of the bag in comparison to Blue Freedom.  The cats eat about the same.  We do give canned food a few times a week, too.

You're welcome! :D I hope it is helpful.
We love Authority and were very happy to have found a quality brand at a good price. But, over the past year I've noticed they seem to be sneaking the price higher and higher. A dollar here, a dollar there. I think they realized comparable foods were selling for much higher. Sigh. Still, it is much cheaper than the Blue. At least they have good sales frequently! We stock up when it's on sale and try to use coupons. Between food (we do canned, too) and litter, cat stuff is one of our larger monthly expenses.

We were going thru 3 11 lb bags of Blue Freedom, 15  5.5oz cans of Blue Freedom and about 4 to 6 42lb bags of fresh step litter per month.  When not on sale that is about $220 per month without buying any treats or water filters cartridges for their water dish.  We always bought a few months worth of cat food when it is on sale.  We try to buy it when it is around $26 a bag.  Since switching to Authority Grain Free, 2 bags last 1 1/2 months and is half the cost of Freedom.  It is a huge savings.  We keep our cats on a strict diet.  Cats are lazy.  Overweight cats tend to have more medical problems.  Overall, we are pretty satisfied with this cat food.   All 7 of my cats eat it without any problems.

We had a puker.  When I say puker, i mean puking 10 times a day.  Our vet said she is healthy and could not find the cause.  Then we stopped applying Revolution flea treatment, it was getting too exspensive ($105 per month).   We never had a flea, but the vet recommended it so we applied every month for a few years dealing with puke and cleaning carpet daily.  It took about 2 months and she almost completely stopped puking.  That was when we went thru anything that we changed.  For days we could not think of anything until I got the email reminder to buy more revolution.  We have not applied it for a year now.  Still not a single flea and very rare for her to puke.

I love my cats, I want them healthy so they will be with me a long time.  I want what is best for them and I want them happy.  Some have issues, but that is another topic for another time.
