I have a mommy cat that I have been fostering for about 3 weeks before she gave birth to 6 healthy babies. She was a stray and warned up to us by the time she gave birth, though she has never been overly affectionate (she is sweet, just not snuggly). She has always been aggressive to my other cats even thought they are always in different rooms (she can smell them under the door and growls/hisses). Well, she was good with people being around her and the kittens until the other night. She spotted my sisters dog through the door and went crazy on my face and head. I was bleeding heavily, but no permanent damage. I'm pretty sure it was misplaced aggression, but I'm afraid she will never be relaxed, always aggressive and have to live in the shelter forever. Has anyone ever had such an aggressive mommy? Did she calm down after the kittens were older? (She will be fixed as soon as the vet says she is ready.) Also, she sat on my lap today for about 20 minutes, so here aggression is unpredictable.

I believe she was worried about her kittens when she heard/saw the dog and went into protection mode.  Unfortunately you were her target.

Yes, we also were adopted by a pregnant cat. She does okay with us.  Mostly she does good with my daughter who is the one who finlly brought her in. She only gve birth to one kitten.  She is a bear.  She is locked in my daughter's bedroom, but she has gotten out twice.  She wants to kill our resident cats.  She will try to go through the glass if we have them on the balcony and she sees them.

But she has been through a lot.  I don't know if she was born feral or dumped at an early age, but here she is less than year old, already a mommy.... and cats can go into heat again right after giving birth - and she did - so that makes her cranky, on top of never having been socialized, and probably beaten up by the other stray/feral cats around our complex.  I feel sorry for her and have been assured by many people that she will change once her cub stops nursing and she is spayed - but until that happens, I recognize and respect for her for the volatile little rocket she is!
