Hi guys,

I have four five month old kittens and one of the little boys has been eating and acting normal just like his siblings. Well this morning when I woke up to feed them and the dogs, he wasn't moving, he was really weak on his body so I took him to the vet and asked why this was happening as he had been at the vet 2 weeks prior and was healthy and happy. Now he is weak and I don't know why. Well I asked the vet if it could be worms even though he got wormed 2 weeks ago, I was told no he shouldn't have worms again. I was told to give him some rest, food and water and let him be, I just went and checked on him and in his littler box is two really long worms.

My question is how can he have worms again when he has only just been wormed?

Usually kittens are wormed at least TWICE, two to three weeks apart.  The first worming is supposed to kill all the adult worms an the second worming is supposed to kill any worms that hatched since the first worming, because worming does NOT kill the eggs.  After the second worming, he should have another fecal check in about 3 weeks to make sure there are no remaining worms.  If there are, you keep worming at regular intervals until all the worms are gone.

I would not think just a couple of worms would make him weak and sick, however, so there may be other things going on.  You should take the two worms you found in the litter box and put them in a small container with alcohol in it and take them to the vet, along with your kitten.  I suppose it is possible that the type of worms these are is an unusual one, and one that the routine wormer was not able to kill.  Stay on top of it until your kitten is no longer under the weather because kittens can have lots of things wrong with them at the same time.  If your vet is not taking you seriously, find another vet for a second opinion, preferably one that specializes in cats, AND/OR at a vet hospital accredited by the AAHA.  You have not yet added your location to your profile, but you can search for AAHA approved animal hospitals in the U.S. and also Canada, I believe, at the following link.

Thank you so much for the advice, he is up moving around and doing all the things he used to. After  normal vet told me this I went to another vet and got him looked at, he was a bit dehydrated and was put on a drip. He will stay the vet until he is walking around properly and when he is no longer weak. I only got these kittens 2 weeks ago as they were living in a place where they weren't getting fed or vet care, the day I got them all I was at the vet straight away getting their shots and everything. I just hope he pulls through OK.
