I have had a male cat for a little over two years now and we recently got him neutered (3 weeks ago). I adopted a young female kitten, and the older cat will not leave the kitten alone. At first, he followed the kitten around incessantly. After a few days of this, he started trying to mount her. At first, the older cat was held off by the kitten swatting at him, but he soon became more aggressive. I have separated the two of them (the kitten stays in the bedroom), however, whenever the older cat catches a glimpse of the kitten, he bolts towards her right away and tries to mount her.
A few things:
1. Usually the older cat is non-confrontational. I hope his behavior is due to an abundance of testosterone in his system that will abate (since he was neutered), but I am getting concerned since it is taking so long.
2. I am also concerned that the kitten will become psychologically scarred by the older cat's advances and when he does calm down, the kitten will not get along. Obviously, I'd like them to be friends.
Is there anything I can do to make this go easier on the two of them? I've been feeding them on opposite sides of the bedroom door, but I am worried that if the offending behavior is hormonal that there is nothing I can do but wait. Any thoughts? Thank you!
