Happy first day of September!

So, apparently the word "Moist" has been voted as the most gross/disliked word in the English language.

How about you guys?

What do you think is the most gross/worst sounding word?

Do you agree with the top choice, or you have something else in mind?

As for myself, I personally find the most gross words are "Sticky" and "Pus/Phlegm". Not a lot of pleasant things come up when I think of sticky, and worse if I actually touch something sticky and have no idea what it is (I definitely go nuts with the eeww factor
) and the words pus and phlegm speaks for itself.

As the most hated, well, it likely isn't the most appropriate word to say here. Let's just say it describes a woman's chest area, and it starts with a T. Just can't stand that word! I cringe every time I hear or see it.

My mom hates the word "moist" and acts like she's grossed out when someone says it, so naturally I like to say it around her often. I agree with you about "pus" being a pretty nasty word, but I think my least favorite of all time (which isn't technically a real word) is "preggers." I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it does. It really does.

The word moist wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list. I automatically associate that word with a moist towelette, a hand wipe or a washcloth and those are usually pleasant. When they are unused of course.

Mine are:

Moldy

Festering

TAX

Banana ( I really hate them)

Slimy/slime

Viscous

Bile

Diaper

I don't like the word moist, either. When I was in my early 20's, certain vulgar words for a woman's anatomy used to bother me...until I made the mistake of telling some male friends that the words grossed me out. Of course, every sentence they uttered to me for the next couple of days contained one of those two words, in the most ridiculous and absurd ways, until I became completely desensitized. Really, I guess I should thank them. :lol3:

I think of cake when I hear moist, I must be weird!!!    I truly can't think of many words that 'gross' me out, I'm a big reader and a nurse so not much bothers me, there ARE two things that get me instantly mad though, not words, but someone snapping their fingers at me, or even worse whistling for me, for some reason that drives me insane! (not a far drive!

I also cannot say the word but it is one of the worst words a woman is called and very degrading, it starts with c and ends with t.

I don't mind the word "moist."  I think of baking and cooking.  To me "moist" brings to mind the words succulent and juicy which gets me thinking of plump fruits and nicely cooked steak.

I don't like the work "like."  The word itself is ok, but so many use the word as a fill in for example.

"Are you like, serious?", "How like, could you like, do that?!", or "I like, seriously don't like believe you could like do something like that!"

When I hear people talk like that I want to go up and slap them silly!  LOL

I absolutely hate the word "absolutely" when it's used in place of a simple "Yes". It absolutely drives me crazy.

My favorite mis-use of "absolutely" was a on a TV show years ago. It was some HGTV show in someone's house, I think. "Jennifer, it's great to meet you." "Absolutely." (Used in this case in place of "Thank you".)

hmmm.........the most gross/worst sounding word.........

i don't find 'moist' gross. my mind goes to cakes and quick breads, and muffins, when i think of moist.

i think the words that seem the most gross or worst sounding to me are swear words and racial slurs.

It's not the meaning of the word that got voted as being gross. It's the word itself. I guess the actual mouthfeel and sound of the word is icky to some. mmm-oy-sss-t. So think of words that might feel gross in your mouth, say the word over and over to see how it feels/sounds after a while.

Gurgle and bulbous got a lot of votes too :D.

I can't think of any words I think are gross but squirrel is a really weird word :lol3:.

Hmm. Those words are pretty close to being onamonapia (they sound like what they are, like 'hiss'). Gurgle is definitely one and bulbous just sounds bulbous. I'll bet that must have something to do with why they are so disliked. Going to go look at the list now, to see if my hypothesis is correct!
