Hello,

I just got a new kitten about a week ago, and ever since I got her she's been having very soft poops. She hasn't had any solid poops, and I'm not sure if I should be concerned about this or not. I took her to the vet a couple days after I got her to get her shots and what not and they did a fecal examination for internal parasites and what not, and it came back negative. The lady I got her from fed her purina kitten chow as well as wet food, and I am feeding her the same thing. I also noticed a tiny streak of blood her in poop about 10 minutes ago which really freaked me out and caused me to write this post. Please help!

Hi!

In house (vet) testing of stool is not nearly as reliable as outside PCR testing at a lab.  I would send the sample out and probably discuss with the vet treating her in advance of a positive result for either coccidia or giardia, which are common kitten parasites.  She also needs to go through a de-worming protocol.  The blood indicates either a parasite or worms.

Feeding her the same foods is a good thing, but if you want to try mellowing out her digestive tract you could feed human baby food chicken Stage 1 (stage one only) for a few days or even better, chopped up boiled chicken and rice.

But the bottom line is, newly adopted kittens with soft bloody stool either have worms or a parasite.
