My boyfriend rescued a kitten last week, it was in he middle of nowhere, miles from he closest house. Th poor little guy was just fur and bones. I haven't been able to take it to the vet yet but most likely be able to tomorrow after getting paid. Anyway, he doesn't appear to have worms, but his fur has a weird texture to it and now his skin seems to be shedding. At first I thought maybe it got its fur singed under a car because its only the fur on his back that feels rough. The fur everywhere else is soft. But the flaking skin and rough fur makes me wonder, could he have a skin condition? Or could the shedding skin be caused from gaining weight and starting to be healthier? Any thoughts or suggestions?

It may be because of his lack of decent nutrition. Fur can begin falling out when a cat doesn't get proper nutrition. Make sure you give him wet kitten food, as it has the extra nutrients he needs.

A trip to the vet will make sure it isn't ringworm or something else like it. The vet will be able to determine what course of treatment he'll need. Don't worry too much if it is ringworm - it is contagious so you should take precautions, just in case. Wash your hands after you handle him and make sure his bedding is cleaned frequently. Ringworm is just a fungus and if he has it, it is because his immune system was so weak. Pets and people with strong immune systems usually don't catch it.

It could also be an allergic reaction to fleas. If you haven't bathed him yet, do so. Use the regular blue Dawn dishwashing liquid and rinse him well.

Thank you for helping him.
