Hi everyone,
Has anyone fed your cat who had bladder stones Iams(Eukanuba) Veterinary Formula Urinary-S Low pH/S Canned Cat Food, or/and Iams(Eukanuba) Veterinary Formula Urinary-O Plus Moderate pH/O Canned Cat Food, or/and Purina Pro Plan Focus Adult Urinary Tract Health?

If so, could you share your experience with the diet?

My cat is on Hill’s c/d canned food. But she was just diagnosed with ear infections. I’m guessing it was from food allergies, so I’m thinking of try a different canned food for urinary health.

I like that both Iams Veterinary Formula Urinary-S and Iams Veterinary Formula Urinary-O don’t contain carrageenan nor guar gum.

I appreciate any help or input.

Hello there,

I feed my cats Orijen, I go between Regional Red, 6 Fish and the Cat & Kitten and have never had a problem.

Good luck,
Hi KatLady1,
Thanks for your response. I googled Orijen, but I don’t think they make food for urinary health nor wet foods… My cat had bladder stones, so I need to feed her a wet food that’s good for urinary health.

If you're really concerned about keeping stones at bay, then go for an actual veterinary formula.

If the stones were a year or more ago, you might want to experiment with feeding a proportion on non urinary wet food. Absolutely take your vet's advice, but it can sometimes work. My crystals boy refused to eat ANY prescription wet, and has maintained for 10 years on a mix of normal wet and prescription dry. I certainly wouldn't advocate feeding any non prescription dry food though. Hydration is really important too - adding a little water to the wet food is never a bad idea.

Please note - I'm only suggesting trying a non prescription wet at all because the Royal Canin prescription food we use says on the pack that it is suggested for use up to 6 months after the crystals, and because of my personal experience (as well as my own vet's approval). I am NOT suggesting that you go against your own vet's advice.

Hi Columbine,

Thank you for your advice. Yes, I don’t want to against my vet's advice. I think Iams Urinary-S and Urinary-O are prescription foods. But my vet didn’t know about them. She said she will take a look up the ingredient lists and get back to me. I haven’t gotten an answer yet. I also googled about the Iam’s Urinary-S and Urinary-O for seeking someone’s experience or reviews, but I only could find a few reviews, so I wanted to ask TCS members about the diets.

It was more than five years ago, but my vet still wants me to feed her hill’s c/d or w/d. Yes, I’m very afraid to changing her diet. Although I don’t like c/d contained guar gum and corn. Also, my other cat used to eat Hill’s w/d, but I had to change her diet because she was diagnosed with IBD. She also had brownish ear wax, when I fed her w/d. But after my IBD kitty is on the NV diet, she doesn’t have brownish ear wax! That’s why I wondered maybe the ear infections caused by food allergy.

I just found out that my stone kitty has high cholesterol level… :(

Thank you again for your response.

Please let me know if anyone has tried Iams Urinary-S and Urinary-O!!

If she's been 5 years stones free, then I don't think you need to be too scared. The single biggest thing you can do for her is make sure she stays really well hydrated. As you don't sound too thrilled with the Hills ingredients, I'd suggest that you pick the food that you're most comfortable with her eating, and see what she thinks of it. For what its worth, of the three you list, I'd probably pick the Iams Urinary O - its the lowest carb by the looks of things, and it hasn't got any wheat in it (another common allergy culprit).

Hi Columbine,
Thank you so much for your helpful advice! Really appreciated!!

If you don't mind my asking, what food do you feed your crystals boy?I think my cat had struvite stones, because she was cured by the s/d canned food.

Thank you for looked up the my food list! If my vet agreed with me, I would like to try Iams Urinary O. I still haven’t received an answer from my vet yet.

Most of the brands I feed now won't mean very much to you as I'm in the uk.

Until recently, I fed Sheba and Gourmet, and sometimes Whiskas (always the gravy ones, as that's what he'd eat). For kibble, he gets the Royal Canin Urinary S/O. He gets about 80% wet and 20% dry.

In the last few months I've managed to get him eating much better quality (imo, anyway) wet. All the foods now are high meat, low carb and grain free. Brands are Thrive Complete, Nature's Menu and Catz Finefood.

Iams Urinary-O has Rosemary extract in it!  Check the ingredients - rosemary is NOT healthy for cats!

Hi Fyllis,
Thanks for the tip! I’ll remember that. But I don’t think Iams Urinary-O has Rosemary extract in it. Where did you get the ingredient list? Here is the list that they posted on their website.

This is the link I went to and read 'rosemary extract' in the ingredients: https://www.iams.com/cat-food/veterinary-formula-cat-food-urinary-plus-moderate-pho

Corn Grits, Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Chicken Liver, Chicken By-Products, Herring Meal (source of Fish Oil), Dried Egg Product, Dried Beet Pulp, Potassium Citrate, Chicken Flavor, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Calcium Carbonate, Brewer's Dried Yeast, DL-Methionine, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate [source of Vitamin B1], Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [source of Vitamin B6], Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement [source of Vitamin B2], Inositol, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Minerals (Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Rosemary Extract

This does say it is the IAMS Urinary-O PLUS  so maybe that is the difference? Looks like this might also be the dry food? Either way, just proves you MUST read labels!!
