My vet suggested Zertec for my cat. But when I looked at the ingredients it said it contained Propoline Glycol.

Is there something I don't know? It seems Zertec is commonly taken.

Here are the ingredients I found on Zyrtec tablets

Colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide

You need to ask your vet if there is something else you can give if you are not comfortable with the ingredients.  I assume you are giving this for allergy purposes?  Just be sure you also know the correct dosage.

I already sent the e-mail. Sadly she failed to respond, again.

She already told me the dose in a previous e-mail. But I do not feel comfortable giving my cat anything with that in there. I am really surprised vets are so willing to hop on board.

I take Zyrtec often. I've never heard of it being recommended for cat allergies. I've heard of using Benadryl. When I first took in my 3rd kitty, I did attempt to give him Benadryl for his watery eyes. I had the capsule kind and broke it open and put it in his water. He didn't really drink the water though so it wasn't really effected.

Please call your vet directly.  If you do not get a response, I would do my best to try and find a new vet.

Please be very cautious giving human medication to cats without the supervision of your vet.  The amount needed for a small cat is quite different than humans.

I do know that Zyrtec and Claritin are often used for dogs.  My parents dog is on Claritin under a vets supervision.

Yes, I was aware of that and had looked up the amount to give per weight of the cat. Benadryl is very common use for dogs/cats allergies. My sister uses it on her cat for travelling. I tried it when I first took my 3rd cat into my home. My vet had said I could try it before I was able to bring him in to the vet (2 days).  And like, I said it didn't work anyway because he wouldn't drink the water out of the bowl I put it in. I wouldn't give mine Claritin or Zyrtec.

No way. Her person just takes the message and then I am stuck waiting around all day for her to respond.

I got to tell you I am convinced that the whole vet lot is just slightly more useful than a wet spoon.  She responded today at her leisure and said "sure see how it works try 1/2 the pill"... see how it works? I could have done that without you. Lets not and say we did.

I have grave concerns about giving any human pill to a cat. Unless the vet can tell me with particularly what will happen.

Zyrtec is an excellent antihistamine for cats. They process it much better than other products. It's becoming very popular among vets for that reason.

I don't see any propylene glycol. . .it's polyethylene glycol. I don't know what the difference is, though. The pill is very small though, so the amount of that ingredient would be miniscule. I guess for me it would depend if you think your cat's health problems are worse than the side effects of the drug. That's pretty much what all medication use boils down to, really :dk:.
