First off, I'd like to mention that I'm not currently in the same state as my Umbra, so I can't provide all too detailed of information.

Anyways, for the past couple of days, she's been laying down between her litter box and the wall it's by, which there's about 2 or 3 feet between the two. I don't particularly understand why she'd be doing this. When we first got her, she ended up claiming the closet nearby as her area, but since she got comfortable, she abandoned it. The closet is opposite of the wall she's laying by, still only a few feet away.

She's turning one next month, and *as far as I know* she's still behaving normally otherwise.

I'm extremely paranoid when it comes to her, so I'd like to know if this is typical. Thanks!

This does not sound like cause for concern unless she's showing signs like lethargy. It might be something as simple as she feels safe in that space with the box forming a barrier on one side and the wall on the other. It still allows her to be out in the open in a way the closet doesn't.

Are there other cats there? If so, selecting this spot might be a dominance thing.

I just got some more information: She's indeed acting completely normal otherwise. And no, there are no other cats. The only reason I got so cautious in this scenario is that I know a cat laying *in* their litter box is a bad sign, so I wasn't sure if this applied to around it as well.

My 16-month-old Maine Coon, Kricket, frequently lays on the rug in front of the litter box. It sits in the bathroom between the tub and vanity. I've come to the conclusion that he just likes it in there. It's dark (unless I am in there for whatever reason), it's cooler (especially up against the tub and on the tile floor), it's quiet (away from the noise in the kitchen, the TV in the living room, and the clatter in my office), and it provides him with 'alone time' away from his rowdy brother. He also enjoys stretching out on the bed on occasion to catch the direct sun filtering through the window or curled up on my feet when I am at my desk.

Unless you are detecting other behavioral problems like decreased appetite, lethargy, or unprovoked aggression, I wouldn't be overly concerned.
