Ok so I have a 6 month old female and a 3-4 month old male. I know that Stella has already gone into heat and she is getting spayed this coming Tuesday. They play together and sleep next to each other and groom each other, but I have never seen anything that would indicate mating behavior between them. (Not that I'm an expert) I knew that female kittens could get pregnant pretty early but I thought that male kittens didn't reach sexual maturity until around 7-8 months? Anyway, I assumed that Oscar was too young for me to be worry about keeping them separated. Tonight however, they were play fighting like usual, and Stella started making that sort of cooing sound that females make. At first Oscar was just continuing to play, but then he started climbing on her back so I separated them immediately and now they are in different rooms. Did I make a mistake? Is he old enough to mate with her? I am really worried now!!

I should also probably mention that he has not shown any signs of sexual maturity (spraying, trying to escape, etc) and if Stella is walking around the house yowling, he never acts interested. Just normal kitten antics.

Both male and female kittens can reach sexual maturity as early as 4 months.  The average for both is 6 months.  Keep Stella's appointment for Tuesday and make one for Oscar as soon as you can.  I cannot stress what a big fan I am of pediatric spay/neuters in kittens.  They recover really quickly, require less drugs and gas for the procedure, and a good surgeon can do it with a tiny incision.  Because the sexual organs are less developed, there is less blood supply to them and the procedure is all over easier on them with a smaller chance of developing a bleeder.

I am no expert on cat mating behavior either--so I couldn't say whether they have mated yet or not.  It could have just been play activity.  Regardless, no time like the present to get them fixed!

Most males aren't fertile yet at that age (although some are!). They'll still practice though ;). But, yeah, definitely keep her appointment for Tuesday, that'll take care of everything.
