I'm wondering if any of you have ever tried to make your own cat trees? I'd like a nice big one for my cats, but I can't see spending $250 on some covered wood and carpet samples. DH and I are gonna try making our own this weekend. Should be interesting.

Also, thought I'd add this link to a tree that I found on the net. It's for sale everyone, take a look at that price!!!

Unbelievable cat tree

Wow! I didn't pay that much for my car!

Walmart sells a basic, three platform, floor to ceiling cat tree for $29.

I've had mine for over a year and it's holding up very well with three cats. One of which is quite large (not fat, just big).

You also can try E-Bay , thats where I got my two from . And only payed $ 150.00 dollars with shipping for a 6 foot tree .

I know I can ask Mike to build me one . But he always go's into extrem and then I end up paying like $ 300.00 and more .

TCS has an ample supply of CD's on how to make a cat tree. If you would make any type of donation to a local animal shelter in your area, I would be happy to mail you out a copy of this CD- that goes for anyone reading this- just email me at [email protected] for details.

There's no place like home
If you have the tools, time and patience, they are not too hard to make. We made ours a 4-tiered, six footer about 14 years ago that is still in heavy use. Here are my tips:

Use good quality carpet. We replaced the original carpet on ours over the summer (the first batch lasted 13-1/2 years), used cheap grade carpet on the replacement and will probably be replacing it again in the spring (9 months).

Don't use treated lumber - if they get thru the carpet or sisal, treated lumber has toxins which is not good for cats.

Use long wood screws over nails for holding it together.

Use glue as well as sturdy staples to hold down the coverings - make sure the staples are well imbedded and pound in with a hammer if they are at all loose.

Use a base that is large enough to hold the support and brace the pole to the base with angle-cut supports. My base is about 28 inches square. I use at least 24 inch square bases on all my scratch posts. They will tip if you don't have a big enough base.

I personaly would never buy me one like that , from top to bottom . I had one not even 8 month and it broke right in the mittle where the tupe is . I am just thankfull non of my cats were hurt when that happend . They may be good if you only have like 3 or 4 cats , but if you have more cats I would not recoment it . That's IMO
I did not buy that one in wal-mart , I buy that tree at Foster and **** from the catalog .
