Hey guys!
I'm new to this site and adopted a 4 month old kitten a few weeks ago. This is my first time ever having a cat as a pet so was just wanting to know the best practice for feeding him. My vet said that I should give him only a dry diet (as that is good for his teeth). But I have read a lot of places saying wet food is the way to go. So what I do is to give him wet food on the weekends (morning and night) and dry food through the week. Is that something that sounds okay?
Also, for the wet food he doesn't eat more than 1 teaspoon during a single sitting. So that is how much I feed him. And as for the dry food, the package (Simply Nourish from PetSmart) says 1 cup for his age and weight per day. However, he does not eat 1 cup and thats why it appears as if I am free-feeding him dry food. Any advice?

Thanks very much in advance

My personal preference is to feed a largely wet diet, or else a mix of wet and dry. If feeding dry only, it's important to make sure your cat stays well hydrated - this usually means taking extra measures to get him drinking, as a cat's this drive isn't strong enough to compensate for the dryness of kibble otherwise. This article has loads of great ideas[article="30756"][/article]

To the best of my knowledge, there are no long term studies that show that one type of food is better than another for a cat. We all have our personal preferences and views, but that is all they are. The only certain way to ensure clean teeth is to brush them using a suitable brush/implement and feline toothpaste [article="0"][/article][article="30206"][/article][article="30205"][/article]

It is really important to be consistent with the types of food you're feeding. If you want to feed a mix of wet and dry, it's important to feed both types of food every day. Kittens need to be fed little and often - 4 meals a day is usual for your boy's age. Another common practice is to feed 4 wet meals, and have kibble available 24/7. This make the old adage of feeding to appetite easy. If your boy isn't gaining weight and growing as he should be, then he might need checking by a vet. Of course, it could simply be that he isn't very keen of the food on offer. It might be worth trying a few different ones to see what he likes. A lot of companies will offer sample sizes of kibble, so you can test it out before committing to a big bag. Some big pet stores may have samples - alternatively, contact some companies direct and ask if they have samples available.

As to how much to feed - this article should help.

Congratulations on your new kitten! :)

I personally think feeding both wet and dry is a good combo.  I feed my 5-month old kitten a large spoonful of wet food in the morning and evening, and leave 1/2-3/4 cup of a good-quality dry kibble for her to snack on whenever she gets hungry.  Also, don't worry about your kitten not eating a full cup of food.  My kitten doesn't eat an entire cup either.  Kittens have small tummies and like to eat several small meals during the day, so for the first year, you can let them eat as much as they want.  So as long as he's growing and happy, I wouldn't worry much about it.
