August 10th 2015, my 2 year old male cat had a UTI.  He was given antibiotics and an anti inflammatory shot.  He seemed fine.   Then again on August 16th he has same symptoms.  In all other aspects he is fine.  Took back to vet they did an x-ray, and sent for a urine culture and both show nothing and no blood in his urine.  Today we are back to him frequently urinating mostly clear but sometimes blood.  Again he seems his usual self.  Dr. asked if he was anxious or nervous about anything?

Anxious or nervous, I have never heard of this causing blood in urine, if this were my cat I would do another round of antibiotic treatment for sure.

I would also be feeding him that specific canned food from the vet that dissolves urinary crystals, vet should know what this is called and have some for you.

He should not continue to have blood or frequent urination, he is not healed yet.

will do thank you.  I feel so bad for my cat, but this makes lots of sense.  I had read that this might also be the cause on a search this morning.  I already called the vet.

I am disagree here a bit which happens often, there is a condition called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis which causes all the symptoms of infection and there is no infection present  http://homevetsnyc.com/feline-idiopathic-cystitis-fic-its-cause-signs-and-cure/

It is thought to be stress related but idiopathic means unknown cause.  Has anything changed recently that could be a source of stress.  Some kitties who become chronic with this are put on an anti-stress medication called amitryptylline.  You could also try running a Feliway diffuser.

Your vet probably won't give you a food for dissolving crystals unless they are present.  They change urine pH and will cause issues if they aren't needed.

I am not familiar with this and appreciate this info. That is assuming he gets a clean bill of health on a follow up urinalysis?

Thank you @Denice

thank you for this information.  I have had to do a lot of traveling as of recent and I am usually his primary care taker.

But will still follow up with vet today.

This happened to my cat. We noticed him straining to pee one morning. Due to previous very serious urination issues we rushed him straight to the vet, where he continued to struggle to pee in small amounts. We managed to get a urine sample from the litter box at the vet for them to test (getting a clean sample with catheter or cystocentesis was not an option due to fears of making existing bladder damage worse). When tests came back confirming infection he was started on antibiotics. He seemed to get better within 1-2 days. Then, suddenly, he started peeing blood in tiny amounts again. I manage to get a sample at home and rush it to vet in the early hours of the morning. Usually they need a vet to examine the cat to order testing but in our case they were able to push it through straight away because our kitten has had so many problems with this before and everyone there knows him. We managed to get an appointment with a vet later that day.

At second appointment vet said that there was NO more infection in the bladder and came to the conclusion that this was now idiopathic cystitis. She asked if anything had changed in the home that could have introduced stress. And yes, it did - my partner's kids came to stay with us for two weeks and this was day 2 of them being there. He really likes the kids but they _are_ loud and it _does_ change the whole environment of the house. We were told to go home and keep the house as calm as possible. We already had a Feliway diffuser but also started supplementing with cystease twice a day and Zylkene once a day. A few days later symptoms gradually disappeared.

Unfortunately idiopathic cystitis and UTI exhibit in very similar ways and often vets prescribe antibiotics before testing the urine, resulting in cats taking antibiotics when they don't really help anything.

(Edit: just remembered that they told us to put him back on Metacam when the symptons, then caused by infection, first appeared as well. This would help with pain relief and inflammation. They told us to do this before they got urine test results back, so before they put him on the appropriate antibiotic. I have read so many horror stories about Metacam and am always afraid to give it to him especially because he has previously had long stints of being on it, but it did seem to help and we gradually weaned the dose down to nothing over the next few days when the antibiotics kicked in)

Hi. I have a 10 month old kitten. Orange tabby and part Bengal. I noticed tonight he has dried blood around his penis. He was licking it and that's when I noticed. I was able to get a good picture. Any thoughts ? Thank you in advance.

Hello! Your little one should see a vet! Sounds like he's having a large amount of irritation.

This happened to my cat one summer when my sister moved in for couple months toting dogs and kids. My cat got a UTI from stress and was put on a bladder health diet food. Had your vet suggested changing the diet?
