I have had the MOST strange experiences today! I'm completely beside myself at this point!

First of all, it all started this morning when I ran out to start my car. I noticed that my back driver side door was open.
I do remember grabbing something from the back seat last night when I came home & I'm assuming I must not have gotten the door completely shut. Thank God it didn't drain my battery! So, I dismissed that due to my own stupidity.

Second, when I got into my car just now to come home for lunch my Drivers door was open just like the other door this morning. It baffled me but I figured since it's below zero here right now that maybe my doors are starting to freeze & won't shut good. So, I dismissed that one too & thanked God that my battery is still holding up.

And now the kicker of them all....when I was going to unlock my apartment door, I realized that the door wasn't pulled shut. It was EXACTLY like the other ones only it's my APARTMENT! I freaked out completely...yelled inside my apartment & then walked in on guard. The cats were freaked out because I yelled, but everything is just like I left it. I did call maintance to repair my disposal & my bedroom window yesterday, but neither of them have been fixed.

So...I'm just baffled! Either I'm not paying attention or this is a sign of some sort...or maybe it's a sign that I'm not paying attention!
I don't think anyone would be doing this to me...plus no one has keys to my apartment or my car.

What do you think? Isn't that the most bizarre thing!

Shell, that is TOTALLY bizarre!!!! Boy - I'd be creeped out too. Glad no one was in your apartment. I cannot imagine what's up. I've never heard of car doors not working because of the cold. I've heard of locks freezing - which can make it near impossible to OPEN the door - but I've never heard of it the other way 'round.

PLEASE be extra careful the next few days and just make sure it was something you did and not someone trying to freak you out!

And do call building maintenance and make sure they haven't been there. Maybe they should take a look at the door too?

The only reason why I thought that the cold was affecting my car doors is because when I tried to shut the door this morning it wouldn't stay shut. It was frozen because it was out in the open cold over night, but after slamming it enough times if finally latched good. As for my driver door, it wasn't a problem at all. I'm betting that I just didn't shut it hard enough this morning. But for my apartment door, I don't know. I remember shutting the door but I'm guilty about not double checking to make sure it's latched 100%. Usually our apartment doors slam when you close them (even when you don't want them to!) & I thought I heard the normal slam of the door. I just checked the door out after I relaxed a bit & it's perfect.

I just really think that either I was completely out of it this morning & last night....or I've got a ghost that follows me around opening my doors!

I will keep a close look out for anything that may seem unusual. One can never been too careful! Thanks Laurie!

Ok I am being a devil's advocate here for a second. But growing up where I did, and being privy to a lot of sneaky things going on- here is goes.

Is is possible that you left your purse unattended at any time? Where someone could come along and quickly take a mold and make keys later? Don't you lock your car doors? Any strange men been following you lately? Did your blind date have access to your purse at any time?

Just questions not accusations. Years ago I was stalked by a man who saw me at a laundromat in San Diego. It was the most terrifying experince and it lasted for months, until he was finally sent back East to his home. I just hope these incidences are just coincidence and nothing else Shell, but keep you eyes and ears open and if it happens again- change your locks!

I agree with hissy. And admittedly, that blind date guy was the first thing new and different in your life that popped into my mind too. Shell, I wouldn't blow this off to coincidence. Please keep an extra sharp eye and be aware for the next few days.

Yikes! Yes... please be extra cautious. And considering changing your locks is a great idea.

I can see this happening accidentally once but we're talking 3 times here......

It could have been a coincidence, but I'd nevertheless warn you to be careful. Having the lock changed on your apartment door, or adding a deadbolt, might not be a bad idea. Definitely do it if this happens again.

Ok Guys...I'm starting to get concerned. I highly doubt that Jon would do this but you all are right since he is the newest connection. I will definitely keep my eyes & ears open at ALL TIMES!
MA-I did leave my purse unattended while I went to the restroom on Saturday night, but Jon's friend Candi watched it during that time. Other than that, my purse is never out of my sight for a minute & neither is my coat since I have a spare inside a hidden compartment (even at work...they're both locked up all day). The chances of someone making a set of my keys are slim, but yet I will keep that in mind. BTW, I always lock my doors on my car...even when I'm driving. The ironic thing about my doors was that the doors were locked even though they were open, so that another reason why I thought I just didn't get them shut tight. Also, my apartment door was locked also even though it was open. My apartment door wasn't wide open, but you could tell it wasn't shut by just looking at it.

As for strange men following me around, no I haven't noticed anyone doing that. I'm usually on high guard since I'm fairly new to this town, so I'm always scanning people & cars that are near by at all times.

I'm really hoping that this is from me not paying close attention or weird circumstances with my car. If this does happen again, I'll be changing the locks on my apartment & putting a security system on my car.
Thanks everyone for looking out for me! I really do appreciate it! I'll let you guys know if something weird happens again!

I have a deadbolt but usually only use it while I'm at home. I'll be using it at all times now!

I could understand the car doors popping open with the extreme cold, but also the apartment door?

When I read your original post, the first thing that came into my mind was the time when the landlord's maintenance crew came in to fix your door when nothing was wrong with it. Apartment maintenance crews I wouldn't trust with a 10 foot pole and that's why I'm finding the apartment door not closed a thing to worry about.

I would change your apartment/car locks to be safe. A little money upfront for your peace of mind would be worth it. It may be coincidence, but it may not be as well.

Always put your safety first Shell, especially because you live alone in a new city!

Shell, I agree with all the others, it's best to be extra cautious right now.

If you find your apartment door open like that again, do not put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation by going inside. Call the police and have them throughly search your apartment to make sure no one is hiding in there. IMO, it's always better to be safe...

And I just wanted to add: A couple of years ago, a young girl living in a town not too far from where I live, apparently suprised someone when she came home from school, and wound up being murdered. Her family discovered her body hanging in a doorway a couple of hours later. She was only 12 years old, you don't want the same thing to happen to you.

Shell, that's creepy! I'd be freaked out, too! Just please make sure to be extra careful! Maybe some pepper-spray would be a good investment?

No weird things happened this afternoon...Thank God! I did notice that maintenance hadn't fixed my disposal this afternoon, so I'm sure it wasn't them doing it on accident.

I really wasn't sure what to do when I found my apartment door like that. I just slowly openned it & peeked in. I knew right away that no one was inside because Echo & Tiki were both laying on the couch. If anyone (except for myself) walks into the door, they both bolt & hide until they are gone or until they feel comfortable. They looked so relaxed & uninterrupted.

I don't think I'm going to change my locks right now. If it happens again, I'll do it in a heartbeat but my gut instinct is telling me that I wasn't paying attention this morning. Regardless, I'm keeping my guard up on high alert right now & for quite some time. Like I said earlier, it's better to be safe than sorry.

I did ask about Walmart selling mace or pepperspray & they told me in Nebraska it's illegal.
I hadn't heard about that before.

Thanks again everyone!

OMG Shell, that is freaky - to say the least! I am glad you and your cats are OK !!!
I agree with everyone else as we all know there are a lot of scary people out there.
But hopefully it was just a strange coincident. Keep safe and make sure your doors are closed and locked when you leave or I'll have to drive down there and kick some butt!

it's illegal where you live? that's kind of stupid, if it protects someone from danger. what about a personal alarm or something? or keeping a pocket knife in your purse?
i've done some strange things .. I put a bottle of water in the cabinet where I keep all of the over the counter meds. i've forgotten to lock the front door at times, even though we have a nice security door that stays locked all of the time.
I would get the locks changed out on your apartment doors just to be on the safe side.

So far out in left field I got lost
Not to throw you into a panic or anyhing but when I read this the first thing that popped in my head was the guy at work. The one that made you uncomfortable and you reported him. I am not saying that he did any of these things but there is a motive here or maybe I have been watcing too many cop shows

I think if another incident happens I would have all the locks changed on my apartment. It is always better to be safe than sorry later on. Take care of you Shell

Shell, back when pepperspray was illegal here, one of my friends carried a bottle of Aquanet aerosol hair spray in her purse. Spray that in someone's eyes, and you might as well have used mace!
