Hi! My kitten was to the vet and got a shot of Convenia on Tuesday. I have her isolated from my other cat, am feeding her every few hours and have a vaporizer running in the room. She seems to be going to the bathroom normally and today I noticed a huge increase in her appetite, however she is still congested and sneezing.

I am looking for advice for what I can do to help her with her congestion. I was running the shower before I bought a vaporizer, but I am not sure that either of those methods have helped very much.

I also need ideas for how to get her to eat out of her dish on her own. Today she ate out of her dish if I held it for her but she wouldn't follow it to the stand it's in or eat out of it unless I held it for her.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :) this is the first time I've had to do any of this.

Hello and welcome!

It will take a bit for her to recover and gain her food interest more.

Her congestion will also improve and clear on it's own.

However, that being said, if she does not show much improvement after a week from the covenia, tell the vet, he may add clavamox to boost her better.

Okay, thank you! I am worrying myself because, like I said, I haven't had to do this before. She's very tiny (1.9lbs) but I will definitely do as you said and call the vet if she isn't any better by Tuesday.

She IS tiny! She should weigh a full 2 lbs at 9 weeks.

I'm happy to help you through this anytime you have questions or concerns :)

You can use plain saline solution or get some baby nose drops, Little Noses, and put one drop in each nostril once or twice a day.  If you can do it about an hour before feeding that would be great because it will help her nose be clear enough to smell her food to eat.   Try placing the bowl on the floor.  You can put it on top of a washcloth or a plastic place mat if she's a messy eater, or just put her food on a paper plate or ceramic saucer.  Be sure to warm up her canned food for a bit to help enhance the aroma and entice her to eat.  You can put eucalyptus oil in the vaporizer and that will help open up her nose, but you'll need to clean the vaporizer daily with some rubbing alcohol because the oil will become very sticky in the well of the vaporizer.

It's going to take time for her to get over this completely.  Be sure she eats well, uses the box normally, and continues to improve.  If you notice any decline, call or get her back to the vet.

Ginap,

I'm sorry to hear your kitty's sick! I had the same problem with my little one a couple weeks ago. The runny nose should subside with her other symptoms. If you still notice it, I would contact your vet for a stronger treatment (most likely clavamox). Clavamox can be a bit rough of tummies but is one heck of an antibiotic. If for some reason you go through all of this and the runny nose still prevails you can give your kitty L-Lysine. It was recommended to me by quite a few users when my kitten was getting treated for his URI and nipped his symptoms in the butt. You can purchase it in treat form at your local Petsmart, or you can pick up in "human form" (?)  from any pharmacy! Best of luck !
