Could a kitten chewing on pencils hurt him? Like give him a splinter in his throat? He's graduated from chewing on wires and such to pencils, which I guess is better, but still not great.

He's 14 weeks old.

Sinbad loves pencils too. And pens. Crochet hooks. Chopsticks. Anything stick like. Offer him a dowel rod and a ball of yarn and he'll go for the dowel rod every time. He prefers the handle end of wands to the feathers and cords.

I do my best to keep him away from them, but I'd love to know if they are actually dangerous as well.

There's no lead in pencils now and graphite is non-toxic, so the main issue would be if she chewed it so much it splintered.. that would definitely be a problem.

How about keeping them out of the way and have something more chewable around that looks a little pencil-like.

I'm not a vet or anything, but I don't thinks it's dangerous for a cat to play with a pencil. The lead is actually graphite. He would have to have really strong teeth or bite on it for a very long time. It seems that kitties just like pencils or anything stick like. But you could keep pencils in a drawer he can't open if you're worried about him swallowing it. Maybe buy him some toys with rods to chew on instead. Agreed, wires are not good to chew on at all.

This is Jumbo stealing the pencil I was using for crossword puzzles. He decide the pencil was his and my hands should've been petting him anyway.

Where my cats are
I was in a pet supply store this evening and I saw some toys that were similar to a pencil shape.  I wish I'd taken a closer look at them now that I've seen your post.  I know some cats enjoy chewing on straws; but those should be supervised and checked for pieces possibly being chewed off.

My cats have chewed pencils in the past. I've switched over to dowel rods, (although I guess any stick would suffice). Dowel rods to play with seem to be their favorite toys. 3/16" to 1/4" seem to be their preferred size.

Safe - who knows. Probably?

So, these two nut jobs were being adorable little pests while I was trying to use the computer. I tossed a pencil on the floor as an improvised toy, and it kept them busy for a while. In the picture, the pencil is stuck in door jamb and they are trying to get it out.

If you get him straws, which some cats that I know very well love, you can get straws made of paper. These would be much safer than those made of plastic.
