Hello all!

I've been reading the threads on this website for a long time but this is my first post!

My little fur-child, Fluffhead, was eating what I thought was a good diet, Orijen dry food and Weruva wet. They sold them at the fancy holistic pet food store, were grain free, etc. so I thought it had to be good! Ugh, I was so wrong...

Recently my cat's tooth fell out! How could this happen! He's only 7! He had a dental cleaning and had to have two more teeth removed. It's so amazing how well cats hide their pain... He was acting perfectly fine!

Anyhow... lots of research later... I want to make my Fluff the healthiest little cat he can be! So, I'm going to transition to raw.

They sell Rad Cat and Primal at the (fancy holistic) pet food store near me. Does anyone have any preference? Do I go for Rad because it has no veggies and fruit? The man who runs the pet food store recommended Primal.

Any advice SO welcomed and appreciated!

I'm sorry to hear about poor Fluffhead's teeth!

We feed our cats Rad Cat (turkey and chicken; they don't like the lamb) as well as various mixtures of all Primal's freeze-dried flavors. Our cats much prefer Primal's freeze-dried over their frozen, though they used to eat both, mixed; that's fine with me because I love the convenience of Primal's freeze-dried food. Despite all the produce in Primal, the food is low-carb and the produce seems to be the source of most of the foods' vitamins and minerals. (I'll take some of those organic produce items over factory-made supplements!) Rad Cat is great food, too, and very simple. I feel very good about feeding it.

Our cats get bored with their food pretty easily so they get fed a combination of those foods and canned foods: Primal for breakfast and dinner, Rad Cat for a light afternoon snack, and canned meals in the late morning and late night. Rad Cat's probably their favorite but they get less of that because there are only two flavors they like and I don't want them to get tired of them! I did see that Rad Cat's introducing venison and beef, though, so who knows what might happen. :-)

Good luck with Fluffhead's new diet! And welcome to the Cat Site!

I bega with feeding the Primal Chubs mixed with Alnutrin. I realized the necks, backs etc. in those chubs were not optimal for my cats. I then began making my own ( buying from Hare-today) I have pretty much stuck with that as the quality of their meats can't be beat. I did supplement with Stella and Chewy's FD and Rad Cat along with occasional frozen nuggets from Primal. Recently my cats began rejecting the Stella and Chewy's FD no matter the kind. I tried Primal FD and they will only eat that as a snack.

My personal opinion is that Rad Cat is as good as it gets for commercial raw. Cats simply do not need the fruit and veggies. Still , Rad Cat is expensive especially if you have multiple cats.Feed both, you will see if your cat has a preference and rotating what you feed is always a great idea.Certainly there would be no harm done.

Are they using necks and backs for the freeze dried and frozen also or just the chubs?

I just checked the ingredients for the frozen turkey mix and grind as well as Primal's FD;  I don't see where it indicates the back is used unless "turkey" is supposed to be the back.

Confused about this, I assumed "turkey" would be breast meat. Where did you hear / see it's turkey backs they are using?

Thanks Maureen .... :)

I am not sure as far as the nuggets or FD goes, I buy the beef. I haven't bought the chubs in over a year. I do remember that the Chicken chubs were necks and backs. I am not sure about the turkey. I stopped buying them right along with the chicken. Sorry, it's been awhile. I think I just felt that if the chicken had poor quality 'parts' the turkey might as well go too.I never tried it again but now that you have checked on the turkey I may keep that in mind for emergencies.I am getting low on my last HT order and I cringe at paying the shipping charges I have to pay when I order in summer. I just got a new cat on Thursday and I have to start ordering more.

I feed both Rad Cat and Primal, along with smallbatch chubs, which I supplement myself. With Primal, I feed both frozen and freeze-dried. I also feed freeze-dried Stella and Chewy. In my opinion, it can't hurt to mix things up. Both cats go crazy over the freeze-dried. Our male loves Rad Cat, the female won't touch it. The female loves canned rabbit but won't touch raw rabbit. But she likes Primal frozen raw turkey. So far, the male likes everything.

Interesting, thanks for the info.

I can't wait to place that order with HT for the rabbit, fur and all - I just still have to wait a bit. My one cat got really fussy with the FD, I have her back on canned now, sigh ... and of course her brother wants what she's eating. I was able to get her back on FD somewhat the last couple of days with toppers but things are all messed up now, stools and all.

My preference would be Rad Cat, but only one cat will eat it. Wish they didn't use eggs though. :(

Congratulations on your new kitty, how exciting!!

I'm so sorry about your kitty's teeth, I hope he's recovered. You are right, cats are masters at hiding their pain.

My preference would be RadCat since there aren't any veggies but the reality is it will be the preference of your kitty. ;)  One of my cats would eat RC but the other wouldn't. Both would eat Primal FD but only one cat would eat Primal raw.

Maybe you could try both, or have FD as a back up for those days you forget to thaw.

Both are very good commercial raw foods. The reason Primal uses those veggies and fruits is b/c they don't use synthetic vitamins. I never noticed large stool waste with those extra veggies and fruits, definitely their stools were much smaller on Primal than a premium grain-free canned (NV).

And both Primal and Rad Cat have pledged transparency to their customers as far as their ingredient sourcing which is nice, only a handful of pet food companies have done this.

Good luck!
