When we adopted our newest baby began to really evaluate what we were feeding our kitties.  My almost three year old girls were getting pro plan indoor formula dry since they turned one but when the baby showed up I switched everyone to wellness dry and began adding in canned for breakfast with measure dry portions mostly because one of my girls, Ariel, is pretty heavy.  I think she should be around 10 to 11 pounds, but she's 13.   The problem is I have is twofold.  She doesn't really like the canned.  I've tried a few brands and she'll eat a little here and there, so she doesn't HATE it, but she doesn't love it.  The other problem is that her sister and the little dude LOVE the canned.  All the canned, so when I try to put out three bowls, they eat theirs then go for hers if she isn't eating fast enough.  And she is really timid, so she backs off and won't eat any more if the others try and get a her bowl.  Not to mention that the kitten, Dmitri,  gets dry as well and she is forever sneaking into the kitten kibble too.  It's like the universe is conspiring for this dang cat not to lose any weight!   I'm not sure if there is a solution, but I wanted to share my struggle and see what other people say.   It also doesn't help that my mom keeps telling to me to quit giving them canned because that's what's making her fat and I'm all she's the one that DOESN"T EAT THE CANNED, Mom!!!  She's be thinner if she did!   My mom and I butt heads alot, her cats are declawed, she free feeds Purina dry, and more or less subscribes to the lowest of the low maintenance pet ownership club.  I mean, her cats are in good shape, but I want to do better for mine, ya know?

I am a new kitty owner so I am not sure what I can contribute. However, one of my kitties is a FOOD FIEND and always tries to eat her brother's food. I have to watch her when I feed them and pull her away. I have even resorted to feeding them in separate rooms, which does work. So, you should try that. She is better behaved now and will not usually bully him out of his bowl, but there are always exceptions.

From what I read, it is dry food that makes cat fatter. Dry food is composed mostly of carbs (not protein), cats need protein and struggle to digest carbs, so the carbs turn to fat. Wet food has much more protein, so I would keep at the wet if you can. Keep trying other brands as I am sure there is something that Ariel will like better. Both my cat's are finicky and after I tried tons of different brands, I just started to stick to the ones that work. But they will reject those too, depending on the day!

Ah, to be a cat. I just wish they could tell me what they want before I open any package so I will not have to open 4 to find out. ;)

I know!  I have had limited success with mixing gravy heavy canned with some dry and she will usually eat some.   I do put her food away from the other two, but when she abandons it after a couple bites the other two will find it,  LOL.   I'm glad I have two out of three sold on the canned, just gotta find the one for ms chubby pants.    And we keep the kitten food in a totally separate room where we can watch the bowl basically at all times and Ariel still tries to eat it.  I'm not really able to go all wet for various reasons., even though I know it's better.  I also have to have dry for when we are away.  My mom will come check on them and refill kibble bowls but she refuses to do canned.
