Hello, Forum, new member here.

So, my cat suddenly stopped eating Sunday evening. I was away most of the day, but came home to vomit residue on my bed and food buried in the carpet by the bedroom door. I took him to the vet after a puking fit on Tuesday afternoon. I picked him up and put him on the bed, then he started hacking white foam stuff. There was a small hairball (very small) and on the fifth "hack" a small strain of carpet came out. I took him to the vet. He weighs more than he did a year ago. All he body signs were normal - temp., eyes, mouth'gums, etc. The vet gave him an IV and some bland cat food.

It's Wednesday evening now. He still hasn't eaten, so I tempted him with some tuna. He took two licks of the juice, walked to the other side of the bed and immediately puked. Some more hairball came out, like a pinky nail size, and the liquid was clear green. He moved to the floor and hacked up foamy white stuff again, then he ran away into the closet.

He's an upstairs/garage attic/roof cat. He doesn't interact with the dogs downstairs, other cats, and we don't have houseplants. He's been in the same living conditions for seven months and his food hasn't changed.

I will definitely follow up with the vet tomorrow, but as a concerned Fur Daddy, I'm concerned and would like to know what's wrong with him. Any ideas?

Small strand of carpet? He may have a blockage. Bring him to the vet and tell them about the carpet and your concern about a blockage from it. If he is friendly enough can you open his mouth? do you see any carpet strand? Possibly wrapped around his tongue and down his throat? If you do, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE IT YOURSELF but you might find your answer there. Even if you cannot see it, that doesn't mean the carpet pieces didn't make it further down his system and are causing problems.

How is he....did you get back to the Vet?  What did they find?  Definitely something bad going on here

He hacked this morning, but not as much as any other time. No real substance. He acts normal. I took him to the vet today. He rubbed against the vet, climbed around, was curious to explore. Very alert. We gave him another iv and anti nausea shot. He hasn't lost even half a pound. No bowel movements, but two urine globs in the litter box. He just hopped out the bathroom window to perch one the lower roof.He does send curious to eat, but he loses interest like he knows he shouldn't. I tried smacking a little wet food juice on his lips so he had to lick it. Slight muscle reaction in the stomach, but no gagging or vomiting.

Well did the Vet check for blockages?  X-ray, anything like that?  What did they say?

Not eating since last Sunday is VERY SERIOUS!  Did they do a blood workup?  Cat's who don't eat sometimes even for 36 hour can have their livers shut down and get what is called Hepatic Lipidosis, which is  life threatening.  They might not lose weight immediately...most owners don't really notice anything is amiss until they start turning yellow from jaundice.

If he still hasn't eaten anything since you've been home, then I would either get him back to the Vet for Xrays to check for a blockage (if you don't have a diagnosis), or I would be finding a different Vet.  Something is obviously wrong
.  Cats do not stop eating for this long for no reason.

I took him to a different vet on Friday. He had blood work and xrays. They came up negative. They gave him a pill to induce hunger and that slowly worked. He hasn't vomited, to my knowledge. He slowly began eating treats, then dry food, then wet. I changed the dry food to the meowix flavor stuff. Whatever to get him to eat, because I knew he liked it. I'm usually better about his diet, but whatever.

I've been out of town and will be for a few more days, but his sitter says he's eating.

Thanks for everyone's concern. He was alert and his normal self, but Friday he looked sluggish. Glad I took him in, they made me wait so long they didn't charge me for anything!

Let's hope he continues to eat, and is eating enough!
