Hello!

I was reading a thread about a cat who had severe liver damage and I want to open it up again and see if there are any updates to your kitties!

My cat - Jonas woke up one Monday morning laying on the ground barely moving. We took him to the vet and they said that his numbers are really awful and that he needed to go through intensive care. We left him there Monday night. He ate a little bit on Tuesday and the doctor said he was doing a little bit better with the IV. However, he didn't do so well over night Tuesday into Wednesday morning. He was very jaundiced and the doctor said he didn't eat. They wanted to put him to sleep but we didn't have the heart to do it. We took him home and have been force feeding him. He lays around and every once in a while he gets up and tries to walk but he is very wobbly and very weak. We are expecting him to pass away because the doctors were pretty sure he would but I'm somewhat optimistic that maybe with force feeding and getting him his nutrients we might be able to help him a little.

Any thoughts or advice? It's been a really rough day and I can't bear the thought of losing him but I'm almost 100% sure we are.

This depends, is there a cause for the liver damage that you know of? Is he on any supportive liver medications?

The doctor was giving him denamarin and famotidine and we just gave him his dose for today. Not sure what the cause was but he was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago and he was getting insulin and he was ok.

My cat recently got diagnosed with diabetes and then stopped eating and began to develop fatty liver. Was your cat eating well? If he stopped eating for a bit and then had liver issues it sounds like fatty liver. Has his urine been tested for ketones and did you do an ultrasound to check for pancreatitis? Diabetes can cause pancreatitis which can cause the cat to not want to eat and in turn cause liver issues. Can you give us more information leading up to all of this? Also any test results/bloodwork that was done?

The Denamarin should help his liver heal, and the famodidine should help his tummy.  If he is jaundice, then he probably does have H/L, which is a tough thing to overcome.  Some cats make it, some don't.  My cat did not.
.  Another Advisor's did
.  I guess it's really a roll of the dice.  Both of our cats were on feeding tubes, which makes it much easier, as these cats need a LOT of nurishment, and trying to feed them many times a day via a syringe is difficult.  My cat was getting feedings every four hours.

Did your Vet give you any special food, like Hills A/D?  It's much easier to use in either the feeding tubes or syringes as it's very smooth and also higher in nutrients than most foods.  You just need to stir in some water to make it a little thinner.
