I was wondering if anyone had any experience with WHISKAS pate?  I'm trying to feed my kittens mostly canned food but can't afford to do just grain-free so have to pad out their diets with the cheap stuff.  I don't have immediate access to Fancy Feast which I see recommended here a lot so have to go with others.  It's about 89cents for 3.5oz so cheaper than most but not store brand.

Anyways, here is the nutritional info (the Ocean & Whitefish Tuna) :

WATER SUFFICIENT FOR PROCESSING, CHICKEN LIVER, OCEAN WHITEFISH, POULTRY BY-PRODUCTS, CHICKEN, TUNA, NATURAL FLAVOR, CALCIUM CARBONATE, SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE, ADDED COLOR, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, CARRAGEENAN, DRIED YAM, DL-METHIONINE, SALT, XANTHAN GUM, ERYTHORBIC ACID, L-CYSTEINE, TAURINE, CHOLINE CHLORIDE, GUAR GUM, VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENT, ZINC SULFATE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), FERROUS SULFATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, COPPER SULFATE, SODIUM NITRITE (FOR COLOR RETENTION), PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, FOLIC ACID, MENADIONE SODIUM BISULFITE COMPLEX (SOURCE OF VITAMIN K ACTIVITY).

Crude Protein Min. 8.0%
Crude Fat Min. 3.5%
Crude Fiber Max. 1.0%
Moisture Max. 82.0%
ASH Max. 3.0%
Zinc Min. 27 mg/kg
Vitamin E Min. 11 IU/kg
Taurine Min. 0.05%

Is it OK that the first listed ingredient (besides water) is liver?  I know it has carrageenan but it appears to be a bit further down the list.  I know it's not great, but for the price it seems acceptable....

Just wanted to add that my kittens LOVED it.  I've never seen Pickles eat everything in a single sitting and since she's so skinny that was encouraging.

I've never tried the Whiskas pates, but these ingredients look comparable to Fancy Feast. With liver as the main ingredient I wouldn't want to feed it as the cat's only food, but as part of a rotation it sounds fine, IMO.

OK, thanks.  I like to give my cats variety and I do plan on keeping up with the grain-free canned food as well.  I have a package of Tiki Cat and Weurva that should be arriving in the mail early next week.

Just bit of an update: I was at Walmart and WHISKAS was on sale for 60cents and I found they had a "Perfect Portions" line of pate.  It's still 3.0oz all together but it's package is divided into two sections.  Which is odd because the guidelines says to feed 3 portions for each 5 pounds (there are 2 portions in a package....sneaky).

However, the ingredients were better than the other pates.

BEEF, MEAT BROTH, MEAT BY-PRODUCTS, CHICKEN LIVER, CHICKEN, POULTRY BY-PRODUCTS, VITAMINS AND MINERALS, NATURAL FLAVOUR, GUAR GUM, COLOUR, SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE, FISH OIL (PRESERVED WITH MIXED TOCOPHEROLS), dl-METHIONINE, SALT, TAURINE.

TURKEY, TURKEY BROTH, MEAT BY-PRODUCTS, CHICKEN, CHICKEN LIVER, POULTRY BY-PRODUCTS, NATURAL FLAVOUR, VITAMINS AND MINERALS, GUAR GUM, COLOUR, SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE, FISH OIL (PRESERVED WITH MIXED TOCOPHEROLS), dl-METHIONINE, SALT, TAURINE.

I was looking at the Fancy Feasts and all the varieties I found at the Walmart had wheat and/or corn gluten near the very beginning of the ingredients list.  So I just took a pass and bought some Friskies.  It was cheaper.

I sometimes get Whiskas Pate beef because FF only has beef FLAVOURED cans (they do have actual beef... but they never sell it where I live). The classics of FF don't have wheat gluten!

The nearest Walmart has a limited selection in every department.   I also wonder if recipes change between countries.  Every can of FF I checked had either corn or wheat in it.  Sometimes both!  Those are the two ingredients I go out of my way to avoid.  I mean the meal supplement FF didn't but I don't have the money to buy foods that can't make up a complete meal.

I need to buy variety because it is turning out because Pickles won't eat the same food twice in the same day.  So I've got to keep switching it up.
