Hello,
I am brand new to the forum and may need some tips and advice for a new 2-3 week old kitten I have found in a storage unit at my apartment complex.
I apologize if there is already a thread outlining all of this, if so please direct me to it.
Thank you in advance.

Here goes.
2 nights ago I heard a small kitten cry coming from a storage unit at my apartment complex. I immediately alerted my property manager and he said he could come out in a few days and check on it.
I sat out there hiding in my car at night for hours the last 2 days waiting to see if a mom cat would show up. Unfortunately, I did not see any cats come by, just kept hearing the faint cries of a small kitten in need. It was breaking my heart that there was nothing I could do. I almost wanted to jimmy open the storage unit and rescue the poor thing.

This morning the property manager stopped by with kitten in hand and asked if I would like to take it in because he's already taken in so many cats that he could not take in another one. Of course I was honored to take in such a fuzzball in need of love. So here I am a brand new mama /papa. To be honest I have never raised a kitten so young. The youngest I have raised is my other stray which was about 6-7 weeks old when I found him alone and afraid under a car in the inner city.

My current care for my new baby for what I've been reading and what other people have told me

Gender
I am unsure how to tell at such a young age. Will testicles or vulva be visible to an untrained eye?

Breed

Unknown. Solid ash grey with white fur on inner ears

Length of current fostering

About 6 hours now( It's 1:50pm (PST) )

Age
2-3 weeks I assume
Eyes are just a wee bit open and it staggers around meowing time to time

Ears are folded not pointed

Pretty much fits in palm of my hand ( I'm kind of a big guy with big hands though, no not bragging just being honest, lol )

Nursery location
In my bedroom which is very warm
Kitten is in a cat carrier with soft blanket and I wrap the kitten in a soft towel after feeding and interaction
Has a Kong monkey toy that it seems to really like, it always escapes the towel wrapping and sleeps under the monkey

I drape a blanket over the carrier to keep kitten warm

Feeding

About 2.5-3 cc of KMR formula every 2 hours
I'm using a syringe for right now but not force feeding, I allow the kitten to suck the formula and I gently let my thumb rest on the plunger.
I gently rub the lower abdomen. genitals and anus with moist warm cotton ball for about 60 seconds to stimulate defecation
I moisten a soft towel with warm water and clean the fur very gently
Then I gently massage the kitten and hold it to my chest for a few minutes
Wrap back up with a clean soft mini towel and place back in cat carrier

Concerns

The kitten smells bad. I understand being outside can cause this. Is there another way I can clean it other than what I do after feeding?

Socializing/introducing my 1 year old male Orange Tabby to the kitten. I brought him to the carrier but he become very upset and started hissing/growling. Should I wait a few weeks for introducing or just in small intervals?

Anything I should look out for in terms of health, disease, virus, infection, etc?

Again thank you in advance. Any tips, help, ideas are very appreciated.

Be well

Here's someone who needs your help with a rather young abandoned kitten. @KittenCrusader is doing pretty good but some hand holding, reassurance, and suggestions from the experts will no doubt be very welcome.

Hi there!

Kitten is not more than 2 weeks old.

Which means needs 3 things.

Warmth, food, potty help. Pottying and warmth are for the next week, after that they basically are okay without help.

Warmth, not blanket type but a heat source, best is a heating pad on low covered with a towel.

If not, then a rice filled sock heated, or a water bottle with hot water covered, or even a ziploc storage baggie doubled works.

Keep temp as consistent as possible. Never feed cool, baby should feel the same temp as you are, and a great way to warm is in your hands, underarm or neck.

Paws and ears should not feel cool or cold.

Feeding-always on tummy, not over like a human baby. Set on a table in front of you or on your lap with a towel, tummy down, head tilted up, syringe a couple drops at a time into the cheek, not down the throat.

(some of this you seem to know already :)

Baby should weigh at least 6 ounces, so in a 24 hour period will need 48 mls of kmr formula. The powdered type is preferred.

(8 mls per ounce of weight per day)

You best friend right now is a scale that weighs in ounces/grams.

This is because the baby needs to be weighed daily to ensure a weight gain of at least 8+ grams a day. Less than this days in a row and it will catch up to him and risk his life.

You can feed every 3 hours if fed is on the hour, not 3 hours after finishing the last feeding. This is alot easier to figure out the right amt to feed.

Don't worry about overfeeding either, allow him/her to take as much as they want.

Also you can post a pic of the genital area and I can tell you male or female. I have this feeling it's a girl but.....

Pottying, sounds like you got it going on now.

The stinky baby smell.

You can bathe, carefully of course.

Dawn dish soap, start with making a ring around the neck of suds, this is so fleas wont climb on to the face when wet.

Soap ring around neck, then wet and soap up the body.

Rinse well, the longer the baby is in water the better for losing any fleas on it.

Towel dry well and blow dry on low temp with your hand in front to block the heat from torching the skin.

If no dryer, towel dry well and keep with you against your body, fluffing the fur until dry.

That's about it!

The biggest danger is fleas, so a bath isn't a bad idea.

Looks healthy and darling of course, I love that you took this precious little lost kid in :)

Thank you everyone for your replies and help.
@catwoman707 I have taken your advice and placed a heating pad under a towel that covers half the cat carrier and turned it on low. I did wash the kitten with your method and used a flea comb. I did not see any fleas which is a releif; however, kitten's fur is rather dark so I will continue to look. I will also send you a picture of kittie's genital area so you can identify gender.
Again thank you everyone!

Hello,

I'm caring for a 2 week old kitten orphaned stray  since Wednesday morning August 26th

Kitten had a poop on Wednesday and then diarrhea early morning on Friday.

Since then the kitten has not defecated. Is urinating on regular basis . I am stimulating for defecation and urination.

Belly seems pretty full.

I have read I could use Milk of Magnesia for kitten constipation; however, I have not found the proper amount to add to KMR formula.

Kitten is about 5-6 ounces

Please let me know about how much Milk of Magnesia can safely be used, otherwise I will bring kitten to the vet tomorrow morning if it hasn't pooped.

Thank you.

It would be better to add a couple of drops of olive or vegetable oil to the kitten's formula to soften things up. You can also buy infant glycerin suppositories at a pharmacy, shave off a tiny sliver, and insert it.

I'm guessing the kitten's issues stem from adjusting from mom's milk to formula. Which brand kitten formula are you using? Are you feeding by bottle or syringe, and how many mL per feeding and how often?

Welcome to TCS and thank you for caring for this kitten :).

I have no experience with the milk of magnesia. However, a couple of drops of olive oil or vegetable oil in the kittens formula has been suggested on this forum by multiple kitten experts/advisors.

Tagging Sarthur2 Sarthur2 for you.

Are you using liquid or powdered kmr? Liquid can cause constipation I learned that the hard way. I would take the baby to the vet and let them do it. I think a little pumpkin could help.

I took kitten to the vet this morning since the baby hasn't passed a stool still.

Kitten seems well, still feeding and active. Temperature was perfect.

The vet said there is a stool in there, it's not hard nor does it seem like diarrhea. He didn't want to induce an unnatural bowel movement by force due to the kittens age and the possibility for rectal strain which could cause even more complications.

The vet prescribed 'Lactulose'  0.1 mil every 8 hours until kitten passes a stool.

We are using powdered 'PetAg KMR'  feeding by bottle

I'm hoping today will be the day for kitten poops.

Thank you everyone.

Victory!! Kitten has pooped! :D

I don't think I've ever been so happy to see poo in my life!

The laxative and a little extra stimulation.

Number 2 works for this guy and gal!!

Thanks again everyone!

What a relief! I'm sure the kitten feels better now too! Hopefully, the sailing will be smoother now :).

Isn't it amazing how exciting poop becomes! Keep the little girl warm in her box with heating pad, but do make sure she has an area w/heater in box (but still with blanket, etc - so she can crawl off the pad if she gets too hot. They CAN overheat. Otherwise - great setup! We also offer singletons a small fuzzy stuffed animal to cuddle with. Often they really do - we surmise they feel less alone !

Can remember if I read what you were stimulating with? Some kittens I have defecate better with a soft warm (VERY wrung out) washcloth (I have 2 warm ones in a ziplock with me every time I feed). I also use the large cotton make-up balls. Gotta switch them out more but sometimes the texture works. But usually wash cloth route!

Lastly - completely agree with those who said 2 things mean much better chance of survival: feeding every four hours on the dourly Tim (3.....4....whatever - thought id point out how often, smalle amounts/ motet often is proven to be the key

Kitten has a large carrier it stays in. I put in a heating pad that covers half of the bottom.
I lay a fleece blanket inside to cover the heating pad folded over about 3 times.
Added a small very soft towel in as well that I blanket over the kitten when it's sleepy time.
Change linens everyday unless there's kitten accident, then changed immediately
Also, has a mini monkey stuffed animal made by Kong that I rub on my 1 year old orange tabby after each wash before placing it back into the carrier. Kitten seems to love the monkey a lot.

I stimulate with large cotton balls or cotton squares that are moistened with warm water.
I've started the 4 hour feeding routine last night.

I'll post pictures tonight of Kitten and Kitten's mini-palace.
Note: My wife has helped a lot as well. She's been feeling left out since I hadn't typed 'We' lol

Thank you everyone, this forum is awesome.

Things seem to be going very well, so glad about that.

Did we determine sex yet?

If not, post a pic and we will tell you. (and your wife!)

Great job to you both!

That kitten has dropped into the lap of luxury!  So glad the three of you found each other.
