So for the past few nights Arya has been running from one end of the room and back for several minutes, with her ears flattened against her head. She acts like she's scared of something, and sometimes she'll step into the closet and pause, staring up towards the ceiling and meow sadly. Her tail swishes back and forth any time she stops during this ritual, and her run is really odd, but that may be because of the tile floor.

A little bit ago while she was doing this, she red head long into the door and smacked her head on it - I don't think she meant to, maybe just couldn't control her direction because of the tile, but it really worried me. Just know she was standing on my bed looking up and pawing at the corner.

This building is really really old and is rumored to be haunted. Is it her simply trying to expend energy (she's pretty active during the day, though, she plays with her toys, and we get a lot of visitors who will play with her. She does sit around a lot, too, though. But she's always been like this, the room is just a bit smaller now), should I be thinking about mice in the walls or something, or is it possible that there's a ghost that's tormenting her or something (if you believe in things like that)?

I'm just trying to look at this from all angles because it worries me, ya know.

This might sound a bit silly, because it wasn't one of the options you were considering.. :p..

But she may need the toilet? Our Kit goes mental the same way you described and runs like a horse back and forth (lol) whipping her tail around, and when she does that, I know she has to go.

My friend's cat does exactly the same thing, so I know it's not just ours that does that, so it could be the same thing with yours too?

Try and hang around and see if she goes to the toilet within about 10-15 minutes of her starting to go ballistic.

hmm I'll have to watch her. As of a few minutes ago she's at it again (at the same exact time  as last night). I also found out that it was her who knocked my bulletin board off the wall last night, and who keeps knocking the wii motion sensor off the TV. Wish I knew how to get her to stop  doing this :-/

Is there something upstairs or in the attic she could be hearing?  It could be mice or something larger like a squirrel or raccoon.

She might be hearing mice or some sort of critter or she may just be running off energy. My youngest, Pooper, does it every night at the same time, around 1 am. We call it 'running her laps' and she goes berserk for about 20-30 minutes. She's almost 5 now and showing no signs of growing out of it.

I had a cat with FHS and she did the sad meow thing, really loud up into the corners of the room. I think she liked hearing the echo bounce off the walls. FHS (Feline hyperesthesia syndrome) can produce some odd behaviors, like severe twitching of the back muscles, and in extreme cases, self mutilation. The reason I mention it is because my cat had uncontrollable tail swishing at the start of an episode. Then, you could see the skin on her back start to crawl and twitch. Next were the loud vocalizations and her running around, almost like she was being chased, or like she was trying to get away from herself. Sounds a bit like what your kitty is doing, so it may be worth looking up to see if you recognize any of the symptoms in Arya.

Most likely, your kitty is just be a goofball, playing around on the tile floor. :) Cats are odd little critters, lol! The fact that it happens at the same time each night seems to support that theory. And I do not discount the ghost idea, either. She may be seeing something that you cannot and reacting to it.

I tend to find with my cats.. they go to the toilet around the same day everyday. It's like they have a set digestive routine. Kit, our white and grey cat does what you described at night, around the same time, then goes.

At least you know how those things got knocked over, and that it was her and nothing paranormal. :)

I knew a person whose dog would stand and bark at something in the corner of the living room. It was weird. Nobody else could see or hear anything. Yes, sometimes I wonder if animals can see beyond this realm.

don't discount the ghost theory as silly. animals can sense things we humans often cannot...
