I'm bringing home a 10 week old kitten tomorrow morning. I"ve been reading all I can find on the topic. But i wanted your advice as well.
I have a 130 pound 2 year old yellow lab dog. He's well trained and smart and lustens well. He's not well socialized to other animals though. Every attempt to get him around other dogs hasnt worked very well. He's just got a nervous temperament. He's okay with people though. A bit too boisterous in his greetings. Ignores squirrels. And has shown that he could care less about the occasional stray cat.
My plan is to keep the kitten cloistered in my oldest son's room for a bit. And i have a small pet crate. I planned on leashing the dog on the gentle leader, and having him go through a sit-down-stay routine on the threshold with kitten safe in crate.
Praise and treat. Gradually get closer until he is calmly near the crate. Any negative reaction and i immediately say no firmly and turn him around and out the door and repeat sit-down-stay.
I plan on doing this for as long as it takes through the next days while letting the kitten have free range in the room with door shut. Eventually have dog on leash but kitten free with an extra person near kitten ready to scoop it up.
Eventually try the crate in the main family room. Slow integration.
Does this seem okay. I will
