I have been fostering through a rescue and I get kittens that are already wormed etc... but I am thinking about switching to fostering through a local shelter instead... I could get pregnant mamas almost ready to birth, or even newly born babies with their mamas, or abandoned kitties.  I am worried about worms.  I know humans can contract worms from animals, it happens all the time, we can have parasites in our bodies and they are wreaking havoc and we don't know it until we do a parasite cleanse.  What I don't know is, how easily is it to get them?  like, if the cat licks his bum and then licks his body, will the eggs go in the fur?  will just kissing the kitty or petting them transfer the eggs to the human?  I don't really worry about myself, because I am an excellent hand washer, however I do wonder about my children, if they go down there and help and forget to wash their hands etc.  Or, alternatively, can us walking in that room, bring the eggs to other parts of the house where my personal cats can get them?    I hope I do not sound completely crazy, but we have lyme disease here and parasites and lyme is a big issue, so I am a bit concerned.  But, I want to continue fostering.  I do realize that even cats that have been wormed could carry worms still..  and we do exercise some precaution.

I think the most likely contact will be cleaning the litter box.

You can request that you only foster cats that have been wormed for health reasons.  You don't have to take a cat you  are uncomfortable caring for.
