I've been feeding a stray named Max for almost a year now. I used to feed him once a day, then it became twice a day- one in the morning and one in the evening. He is somewhat aggressive so I don't pet him but for a few months now, he's been really mellow. Max has a history of illness/injuries. I don't know if someone else is taking care of him because everytime he got sick or injured, he would recover from it. One time, he came to my door with a swollen eye. His condition got worse until the swelling shut his eye. I tried to get him inside a carrier so I could take him to a vet but he refused to do so. A few days later though, his eye got progressively better until it went back to normal. Another time, he came to my door limping. I wasn't sure if his leg got  run over or if he had gotten into a fight with another cat, but he had troubles walking. Again, I tried to get him into a carrier but he refused to do so. I tried for about a week but it was unsuccessful. Then about a week later, I could tell that he was getting better. I think it took about another 2 weeks until he started walking like he used to again.  I don't know if cats can naturally heal  after something like this so it makes me think that he has someone partially taking care of him.

Anyway, I have a new concern. A few days ago, I fed Max as usual around 6 pm. I left food on a paper plate right outside the side door of my kitchen. As usual, I greeted him and he looked fine. About 20 minutes passed, then I cleaned up his leftovers. I then noticed a long blood clot, about 8 inches, by the paper plate. I am almost certain that this blood clot came from him because I found it at his feeding spot. I'm not sure though if he threw it up or something else. The next day, I saw him again. He looked fine for a stray cat. I'm really concerned about him. Again, I only feed this cat. I've never petted him or picked him up.  Sometimes he snorts when he eats or if he gets over excited ( like if I give him extra food). I feed him Wellness wet food  that comes in a pouch ( tuna and chicken are his favorite) plus some dry food. I also make sure to give him fresh water every time. He also has his own carrier that I could never use because he doesn't like going inside it. The carrier is pretty big ( for pets over 30 pounds) so that he has extra room etc. I will try to take him to the vet but I feel like it will be unsuccessful again primarily because Max can get aggressive and unpredictable when he doesn't want to do something. I have two other pet cats that he doesn't get along with. But again, lately I noticed he's been pretty mellow.

From what I have described, is this life threatening? What could this illness be? . Thank you for all your input.

Oh and I have spoken to my primary vet ( for my two pet cats) about Max. I got the impression that he doesn't think it's a good idea that I'm feeding a stray cat.

I would begin by starting to feed him in the carrier.  Place his food right outside the carrier and then gradually move it inside the carrier and finally all the way in the back.  This is definitely a way to get him into a carrier.  ALso could could borrow a humane trap?  That would be best.  I also would suggest finding another vet who would help you with this cat.

The cat most likely needs to be neutered.  It may be why he comes with so many injuries.  Tom cats are all about their hormones.  THey cannot control themselves and will fight and wander in search of a mate.  It is a very hard life being ruled by hormones.  The kindest thing you can do for him is to rent, borrow or purchase a humane trap.  Then get him to the vet for a check up and neuter.  You then can release him back into your yard.  The vet should tip (notch) his ear to designate that he has been neutered.  This process is referred to as TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return).
