My Bella is not a large cat... in fact she was the smallest of her litter. Her mother was also small-ish. This is why I was surprised when my beautiful Bella gave birth to 7 babies!

They were born the morning of the 19th all across the living room floor, then she moved them into her bed in the dining room. At 4:30 am that first night she woke me up as she moved a kitten into my room under one of my dresser... pretty much sleep walking and confused I brought the little angel back to the others and went to bed. I had a weird feeling, and went looking. As I suspected Bella moved the same one back underneath the dresser. I put a blanket flat underneath the dresser and brought the other 6 kittens in to join their mum. I also brought in her water and food.

Day 2 and Bella has been a wonderful mommy and taking good care of herself. She spends most of her time nursing and purring, and when the babies are sleeping soundly she eats herself, goes out to use her litter box, and comes to me for snuggles for a short time. After reading up on newborn kittens, I decided tonight to weigh them so as to keep track of their growth. We have weights of 4.6, 4.4, 4.0, 3.8, 3.7, 3.6, and 2.8 ounces. I don't bother Bella as she seems to be doing well, but I do check on them to make sure the littlest one is getting a nipple. At one point I heard squeaky mews and checked in on them... the littlest one was behind Bella almost underneath her while the others were suckling away! I brought her(him?) to the rest of the frisky bunch and she instantly started rooting and battling for a nip.

Do these weights seem okay? Any advice is welcomed! I have never been on a forum for any reason before... so please excuse any naivety.

Thank you in advance!!

The weights look very good except for the smallest.  Keep moving her onto a nipple when she is pushed off.

You may want to get some KMR (Pet Ag powder is best) and syringes, small 1 - 2 ml/cc in case you need to supplement.

Also get some unflavored pedialyte and udder cream for mom's nipples.

Most of this can be found at Walmart, pet stores or on-line.

The best way to know if you need to step in and supplement is by weighing the kittens at the same time each day.  They should gain a minimum of .2 - .4 ounces a day.  They may not gain much the first day because mom has colostrum which is full of antibodies.  Milk production begins after a day or two.

Mom needs lots of food.  Kitten food is best, it has more nutrients than adult food.  and wet food is better than dry.  Most people feed both, leaving the dry out for free feeding.  You can also give mom a small dish of the KMR every day.  She needs the extra calcium.

Post some pictures if you can.

Welcome!  Good you are weighing them, proceed with this every day!  The weight are excellent, and as you say, its the smallest whom you must look extra for.

Perhaps you will need to have some sort of rotation system...  Or at least, put him forward when the siblings are contend and sleeping...

I have placed both dry and wet food out for her, and I'll get some kitten food and KMR tomorrow. Do I rub the pedialyte on her nipples as well as udder cream? I never thought to use pedialyte! :)

Yes I'll keep an eye on the little one and make sure she gets her fair share. I'll weigh them nightly and chart the results.

Thank you for the welcome and the replies! I'll certainly be posting some pic's of my little angels tomorrow!

:)

The pedialyte is to have on hand in case anyone gets diarrhea or is otherwise dehydrated. You would give it to the kittens by syringe, or mix it into the formula if you need to supplement.

The udder cream is to keep mom's nipples from getting sore and chapped since she is nursing seven kittens.

Please post weights tomorrow so we can see if everyone is gaining.

It did sound in Handsome Kitty's post like the pedialyte was for her nipples the way it was written. Kind of funny :).

Lol that's OK...

Everyone is doing well. I changed the bedding, restocked on wet food and bought kitten food for Bella. I'm ordering KMR and should have it Monday for just in case and I also have the clear pedialyte. I tried to post pictures from my phone but I'm not sure if it worked.

Awesome :).

We'll look for pictures. Sometimes they are held for moderator approval first.

I am just so in love with them all. You're probably right about the pictures waiting to be approved.

The smaller one we've named marshmallow, who seems just as active as the others. I've made sure to get her nipple space especially while others are sleeping.

End of Day 3 weigh ins! The kids and I named them to make tracking easier, I will list Day 2 weights to show their gains as well:

Nermal - 3.8 to 4.2 = 0.4 gain

Socks -   4.0 to 4.5 = 0.5 gain

Oreo -     4.6 to 4.8 = 0.2 gain

Cookie - 4.4 to 4.7 = 0.3 gain

Mufasa- 3.7 to 3.9 = 0.2 gain

Zelda -   3.6 to 4.0 = 0.4 gain

Marshmellow - 2.8 to 3.0 = 0.2 gain

Marshmellow is our peanut. Everytime I checked in on them this little one has been suckling well although I do see Oreo and Socks turning out to be the bullies!

I am happy to see they've all gained! They've been much more active today, crawling all over one another. I saw two of them getting into slap fights, which I gotta tell you was hilarious!

Can you put Marshmellow on mom's nipple when the other kittens are sleeping?  She needs to gain more.

Yes, I can. I will actually do that now, as they are all in a kitty-pig pile sleeping

It's good that all have gained, but you may end up having to supplement a runt or two. Seven is a lot!

You need to keep a close eye out. We will know more tomorrow. Are you prepared to supplement at a moment's notice?

In the meantime, they do appear to be managing. Let's see what tomorrow brings!

I ordered the PetAg KMR and 1mL needleless syringes, I'll have them in by Monday evening. I picked up the Pedialyte today. Do you think I'll need anything else? I have no reservations about supplementing. I'll do anything I can and more for them. I will be weighing nightly as well. Sigh... I just love them so much!
