One of my favorite hobbies is aquariums keeping, specifically live planted aquariums.  I don't think there is anything more beautiful than a properly aquascaped planted aquarium. Does anyone else share my passion for fish and aquariums?

Here are some of my planted aquariums I have setup and designed:

I find fish very interesting and I love to look at nicely set up tanks but I think my fish days are behind me.  Money I'm not interested in spending and maintenance I don't enjoy doing.  I never had much success with aquatic plants but I mainly kept African cichlids and they are herbivores, they like to dig and while they are hardy and can live in tap water straight out of the faucet, if you maintain their water to what it would be like in their home lakes it's going to be extremely alkaline and a lot of plants don't love that.  Or all the salt I had in my tank.

So I only had smaller tanks with other stuff in it and it just never did that well or something I had ate it.  I bought an Apple snail one and it was mind boggling how much destruction it could do to plants.

Here was my Afican tank, not the best pic but it's long gone now so this is probably what we are working with:

Looks good! I used to be into cichlids a little bit before I discovered the world of aquascaping and live plants. Now i'm hooked haha.

Anyone feel the fish bug? It seems to build up some sort of complex for bigger and better and more. LOL

We started with the 10 gallon, now the 25. I can't help but wanting a 50+ or 100+ in my near future....

me too! I have the perfect spot for a 100 gal tank, but it's the cost that's holding me back, lol

We were blessed on the 25. I found the stand, and tank and also lights and filters for $50 at a yard sale.

Currently, Petco has their "$1 per gallon sale" up to 100. Or maybe 50... The spot where this 25 is, I know would easily accommodate a 50

Nice pictures

I have a brand new 6 gallon fish tank still in the box that I bought to put a betta in but it hasn't happened yet
The tank was on sale for like $26 and the original price was closer to $100 so it was too good of a deal to pass up
I don't have a good relatively cat-proof spot to the the tank other than the top of my dresser but I don't want a noisy fish tank in the bedroom. I thought about a heavy duty shelving unit but those are too inudstrial and utilitarian looking. Metro wire shelving units are nice and would work but expensive. I'm not sure if Ikea's wooden shelving units would hold up to a heavy fish tank.

Sure is! Thanks, Draco! I'll have to stop by and check out your aquarium thread.

Once it hits, it hits hard haha. I don't think iv'e had only one tank for quite awhile now lol. I find the 40 gallon breeder to be my favorite size for scaping and just in general. Lovely dimensions.

Thanks. Awesome! I know some people who have used tables from Ikea. 6 gallons should be too much either. Better to over compensate though in this hobby.

That's my thought, too. I need something to hold up to like 800 pounds or something just to be safe. And the whole thing would need to be attached to the wall using those safety clip things to be extra secure from the cats.

It is only a 6 gallon? Any standard shelf should do just fine. Even the cheap $19 wal-mart shelves.

6 gallons, you can use a sponge filter and it'd be much quieter! especially if you just have a betta and plants :)

and yes, 6 gals isn't too heavy!

I need something sturdy and heavy that would withstand one crazy high energy Aby streaking across the shelf and jumping up and off it and one cat who likes to push things onto the floor
A filled 6 fallon tank is probably too heavy for a cat to push but I still worry
