My cat Pudden is on 10mg of prednisone a day for asthma. I know inhaled flovent is the best from of treatment, but the expense is unbearable and ordering online has proven to be impossible.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with their cat being on a high dose of prednisone longterm? Did it keep the asthma under control? I have read over time it stops working. I appreciate it so much guys!

Sorry no one can give you feedback - I do use prednisone for my cat but only for a 2 or 3 day stretch when she has a bladder lining flare-up, which is only a handful of times a year.

So it's not really comparable to what you use it for.  But I can tell you that my cat does not seem to suffer from the side effect of being itchy, and high strung while taking it.  I have heard  that those can be bothersome side effects.

Now I have indeed heard that prednisone, which is a steroid, does become less and less effective over time.  But if it works for now, and is manageable cost-wise, and your cat gets real relief, I say continue on until it doesn't work anymore.  I might double check that long term it doesn't harm other organs though.

My kitty is on prednisolone long term but it is for IBD rather than asthma.  He was on a high dose at first when he was very sick and it was tapered down to a low dose.  He recently had to have the dose increased because he had begun to loose weight.

For most kitties the issue with long term use is diabetes.  The higher the dose the higher the risk.  I think to a certain extent genetic predisposition comes into it.  Some kitties can be on steroids for years and not develop diabetes others seem to develop it quickly.  Usually the diabetes will resolve when the steroid is discontinued.
