help need advice on my blind cat

so my 18 year old cat recently became blind and often crashes into walls and furniture ive read many articles and things on how to help him and they all say that he will adapt but will the process be too stressful for him and cause him to be unhappy or should I put him down so he doesn't struggle? all advice is accepted thankyou!

he does have some trouble walking and often falls down the stairs when he goes to his litter box but I am afraid to move it because he wont find it, his fur is also really tangled even though I tried to brush it he seemed really uncomfortable and im not sure if there's any chance that's slowing him down if the knots are too tight? And hes also just stopped caring for himself he doesn't like lick himself anymore and the sand from his litterbox is all over his feet and after we get it off within a day it's there again.
