I am currently feeding Blue Wilderness Chicken, with hairball control.  I have one cat with FLUTD, The other six are all fine.  Blue Wilderness is $40 per 12 pound bag here -- I am looking for a more economical option, but only if it is the right option.  Any ideas?

Everything I would probably say to you has been discussed recently in another thread, so I will send you there.  You can always private message any of the participants if you want to know more about what results they are having.  I agree the point of view that getting more water into them is most important and thus feeding wet food is the best way.  You should continue to research what other folks are doing with success because normal vets do don't get a lot of training on Cat Nutrition in school or after it unless they are cat specialists, and Hills was the first company to put out special diet foods and most vets go straight to the Hills Dry Food appropriate to the condition they are treating.  Follow up in our forums on nutrition because there's a lot of knowledge there to be had.  It's not that your vet is wrong but just that there may be a better approach to the problem that he doesn't know much about because it was not taught in vet school.

I contributed to that thread. The one thing that wasn't covered was feeding non prescription dry food. Whilst I am happy to feed non prescription WET food for long term maintenance for a FLUTD cat, I would feel much less comfortable feeding a non prescription dry food. Obviously, its been working for you so far, but it just worries me. If you're going to stick to non prescription kibble, then its even more important that you take extra measures to keep fluid intake high.
