Brutus is my 9 year old Orange Tabby, everyone's new best friend when I have company, and a great cat... I moved about 3 weeks ago, and while I was packing to move he started pooping in the double wide recliner I sit in every nite... I figured it was because he didn't like the changes happening, and because I work full time then came home and packed, so I paid more attention to him and made sure he got LOTS of attention, and it mostly stopped. Now that I've moved, (things were fine until about a week ago) he's started again.

He and Roxie, his housemate are getting along better now than they were in my apartment, they have more room, and they get lots of attention.... what is going on!?!?!

I've cleaned the chair throroughly (put my face right where he goes and no smell) and for the last two days have put tin foil on the seat of the chair, and no "presents", he only does this when I'm not home or asleep.

He's healthy, we have 3 litter boxes, and they get cleaned daily! Suggestions???

Since you've confirmed he doesn't have a health issue, my guess is he's still unsettled from the move. The foil is a great idea - you can also try a piece of that plastic carpet runner flipped upside down so the little knobs face up. Most cats hate the feel of it and you can just roll it up after. Chances are he'll relax as he settles in -moving is really stressful to some cats.

You can also try Feliway plugin diffusers...when we moved, we had one for the last 2 months in the old house and the first two in the new house. They really helped our clan calm down.

One more thing to check is if he actually uses all three boxes or if he avoids one or two. It may be that he doesn't like the new placement. If thats the case, there are some good placement suggestions here:

Thank you for your reply! I've been making sure to spend time playing every nite, I work long days sometimes... He was surrendered before I got him at the Ozaukee County Humane Society in 2012 because the people who had him had small children, and he began peeing on their toys. I thought it was because he wasn't getting enough attention, however, since I added Roxie, he seems a bit possessive. He will sit and stare at her if she's in my lap or on the chair with me until she gets down... could he be trying to show dominance? Saying in essence "This is MY chair"?

The tin foil has worked for 2 days in a row... how long do I keep using it? Will he eventually forget about it?

Any additional ideas or shared experience will be appreciated.

I used the foil trick to get my guys to stay off the kitchen island...it took about 3 weeks before they completely lost interest in even testing it.

Thanks for the confirmation! It does seem to deter him, do you think he'll forget? OR find somewhere new?

New development last nite - He's always done it when I'm asleep or not home but last nite, he and Roxie had an altercation, no actual physical contact, they swiped at each other like a couple little girls play fighting. Roxie hollered and left the scene. At some point, she was up on my loveseat, and I saw Brutus go up there, and saw her get down then I went back to whatever I was doing. A few minutes later, I got up and there was a poop on the loveseat!

It's weird that he seems to be acting territorial given they generally get along much better - they'll even eat off the same dish!

What do I do?

I would focus on trying to keep them calm when they're in shared areas - feliway works well, as do Rescue Remedies, and try to make sure Brutus isn't getting stressed. If he is acting out because he's stressed from the move, it's possible he's just more susceptible to all stress at the moment.

Good News!! I finally discovered the culprit was ROXIE!!
...when we first moved, I had tried having all three boxes in the laundry room, and thought maybe they're too close to each other, so I moved one into my office. That way, they're separated and there's a "bathroom" at either end of the house.

I watched her one morning sniff all around the box in the office and then move a foot or so away, and pee right on the rug.. after I cleaned that up, (made sure there was NO smell, she pooped there too, twice!! Guess I'm a little slow to get the message.

That was the spot where I put a temporary box I keep as a spare the day we moved. It was probably there for a few days until we got more settled, so I thought maybe she thinks a box "should" be there. Put it back, and NO MORE ACCIDENTS!!!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your help and advice!!! It's great to know I can come here and get solid advice from people KNOW cats!
