Hello cat lovers,
Posting here in a bit of a last ditch attempt to get some ideas.
Can anyone brainstorm conditions that would show the following symptoms in a young (1yr old), otherwise healthy cat living in the UK:
hunched, apparent pain
not eating or drinking
lethargic
slow, weak gait
drooling
wandering/ walking in circles
holding head at strange angle
(third eyelid showing on one side - could just be dehyradtion)
still affectionate and keen for human contact when on pain relief
I'd welcome any suggestions.
Longer version below, but i'd welcome your answers regardless of whether you choose to read this bit or not!
One of our cats, Grey, who is just a little over one, went from a healthy, active, free-ranging cat to suddenly appearing hunched and in pain overnight. He began staring at nothing, watching empty spaces and sitting in funny places. He wouldn't eat or drink. We gave him some metacam, which seemed to help a little bit, and took him to the vet the next morning. By the time we reached the vet he was drooling, holding his head at a funny angle and circling.
The vet thought it might be toxoplasmosis (he hunts and eats a lot of his prey), and transferred him to another, bigger branch. He's been there for 24 hours on IV fluids and pain relief, and last night they started him on broad spectrum antibiotics and steroids. This morning he is a little worse, showing more neurological symptoms.
The vets at the practice all seem to disagree on what to do. One thinks he might have an abscess in his skull, and wants to sedate and x-ray him. Another still thinks toxo and wants to start him on treatment for that. I've said yes to both, but no to some of the other tests - he isn't insured, and we've already spent around £500. I'm trying to focus on options that may be treatable, as it seems pointless at this stage to spend another £150 to find out he's got something terminal.
Can anyone think of anything that fits these symptoms, or other things we could try?
Many thanks x
