I have been caring for a feral colony of 10+ since around early February. All are related and related to my 3 I adopted over a year ago. A male and female kitten that mom began bringing in for food, were left here about a month ago. The home next door to me is vacant and they live under the house, but spend the majority of their time at my house. The closest I can get to them is about 4 feet. I have infrared cameras stationed around my yard and the feeding station so I can keep an eye and a record on who is coming and going. I know these cats and their schedules and habits. Tonight I put their fresh water and canned food down and walked away far enough and saw both kittens come over and eat. So I went inside to give them space. 1 hour later I went out to check one of the cameras and saw the little male sitting by the vacant house, totally normal. The little girl was no where to be seen.

These two were inseparable. Where one went, both went. I looked for her for over 4 hours. She is no where to be found. My fear was she had gotten into my dads truck (not normal), and when he left, she was taken by accident. We retraced the path he drove multiple times and found nothing. He had gone to Petsmart, so, we went back there. We searched all the bushes around the building, nothing. It's a large shopping center, so not a lot of hiding places. Nothing.

Needless to say we are devastated. Probably a bad thing, but we had named all the members of the colony, mainly for ID purposes, but for affectionate reasons too. Of course the little brother is looking for her. I feel terrible for him too. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the possibility of her being caught in the truck. The events that would have taken place to make all that possible are a bit fantastical, but not impossible. I don't think another cat harmed her. We have been watching these guys for months and there has never been and issue between any of them.

I guess I'm just hoping for a miracle and for someone to tell me I'm not the worst caregiver on earth for allowing something like this to happen. I knew when I began caring for them this was a possibility. I was taking every precaution I could to keep them safe. 24hr surveillance, registering the colony with my city, registering myself as their caregiver, trying to get everyone worked through the TNR program.

For people that have been doing this for so long, how do you deal with things like this? :bawling:

Sorry, I just saw this.  Please do not blame yourself.  This is one of the heartbreaks of caring for a colony - you have very little control over what happens to them.  Hopefully, he is on a little adventure and returns soon.

BTW - have they all been spayed or neutered?  That will definitely help to keep them from wandering, especially the males, who will travel miles looking for females.

Fingers crossed he comes back.  Blessings on you for caring and for helping them!

Thank you for your reply. We are feeling more and more that she was definitely in the car when my dad left. It's just heartbreaking.

Not all have been TNR'd yet. We are working through them all. They don't all come in regularly, so it's tough to catch them coming through. But we are working on it!

Our town has a registration process for colonies and one of our colony caretakers actually chips each of her cats.  She reported once that one of her cats was found almost ten miles away from the colony.  He was one who showed up sporadically, so she has no idea if it was a routine, he got lost or he hitched a ride somehow.

I will still pray that the little girl returns safely.  They can make amazing journeys and do amazing things to return home.

Getting them all spayed or neutered is a tough job.  It sounds like you have a lot of support  with your city.  Maybe you can put the word out to the other caregivers to keep an eye out for the little girl.

With all your safety measures, you are doing an amazing job.  Set backs like this can be so hard but please keep up the work.

Thank you.

I am worried about the little brother though. They were inseparable and she seemed to be a little more of a leader than he is. Anytime I looked out my window, I would see them playing. He hasn't been seen much at all wince she went missing. He seems lost without her. There is a young male that they both friended, he's very sweet. He was actually caring for him and seemed to kind of be 'babysitting'. But today the little one just didn't come around until after dark. Very, very unusual.

I don't know what's best for him right now. Should I just leave him and see what happens or try to trap him, get all his vet needs squared away and look for a good home for him? It's not a possibility for me to keep him. My home is bursting at the seems as it is!

UPDATE: we saw Ellie tonight!! She is a few streets over from our house and staying at a home with a litter of very small kittens! She is alive and we are thrilled to know that. She looked perfect and healthy. Now if I could only get her and bring her home!!

Wonderful news!  If you can spay her and neuter her brother as soon as possible, they may return "home" and stay.  She could have wandered off looking for love.
