Hi everyone,

Seems my cat got into a scuffle with another creature outdoors, yesterday or day before...Brought him to vet today to check cuts/listlessness, and she found he has a fever due to abscessed wounds. Gave him 14-day antibiotic. That was this afternoon.

Tonight, he is still just sleeping, listless (but purrs a bit, meowed once, ate a bit), and his face (due to abscess?) is very swollen on one side--it wasn't earlier today. He was also resting on the bathroom rug, where he NEVER sits/lies down.

My question is: Should this swelling happen after antibiotics are given? Maybe they take a while to kick in? Should he go to ER vet tonight, or should I see if things look better tomorrow?

Thanks for advice!!! Worried. :(

It can take a while for the antibiotic to kick in, but do you know how to take your cat's temp?  It might be worthwhile to do this to help gauge how serious the situation is.  Instructions here http://www.wikihow.com/Check-a-Cat-for-Fever  and if you are really concerned then take him in to the ER, and if he refuses to eat that is another reason for more help.

Thanks Stephen. He did eat and use the litter box today, so that's a good sign. Still seems like he has fever, and swollen face, though he seems slightly higher energy today. Vet said to come in tomorrow if things aren't markedly better. I will do that. Thanks again for the response!
