Hello! I am new to this site - thanks for a great forum for cat lovers!

My cat is 11 years old, overall very good health. He got his annual vaccines at the end of July. I was rubbing him last week and felt a lump right below his shoulder blades...pretty firm, about the size of a large grape and moveable. I brought him to his vet; she felt it, thought it felt firm with some softness and thought it was fluid buildup due to his vaccines (as an aside....that was her first thought: a reaction to vaccine, but then she was surprised she'd give him a vaccine there....I reminded her she did give him a shot below his shoulder blades because the day of his shots he would not come out of his carrier!! He's terrified of the vet).

She said that we should wait about 3-4 weeks and follow-up if the bump is still there, as it should go away by then; she said if it gets harder or larger to make an appointment before the 4 weeks.

Has anyone else experienced this with their cats? Of course when I look it up online, I find info on malignant tumors caused by vaccines, so now I'm in full-on panic mode :(

Thank you sooooo much for your help and support!!!

Hi,

It's unlikely to be serious given how soon it showed up after vaccination, as swelling (a lump) is a common side effect.  This quote "A small, firm swelling may also develop under the skin at the site of a recent vaccination; this should disappear within a couple weeks. If the swelling persists for more than three weeks, or if it appears to grow larger in size, contact your veterinarian." is from this AVMA website and is why your vet says just to wait.  https://www.avma.org/KB/Resources/Reference/Pages/rbbroch.aspx

The research you found about injection-associated sarcomas is exactly why most vets no longer vaccinate in the shoulder blade area.  Very hard, nigh impossible to amputate there.

But yes, a small swelling is acceptable as long as it dissipates.  You may want to look into getting a carrier that top loads in addition to front loads.  That way, your vet can open the top and vaccinate in the rear legs as is more appropriate--although s/he would still probably want to do a physical exam, which necessitates getting kitty out of the carrier.
