A friend of mine just recently won an eBay auction. He chose to use Paypal and link the payment to his credit card. He just got an email from the seller that said the following:

Hello,
I have received your payment...kind of. Since I have a personal account Paypal is not letting me receive payments from Paypal accounts that are linked to credit cards. Is it possible for you to link your bank account to Paypal since it will not let me accept money from credit cards? Thanks and get back to me ASAP!
Anybody know if this is legitimate? I don't really have that much experience with Paypal to know.

So far out in left field I got lost
The seller should have stated in the auction that he doesn't accept Paypal Credit card payments and that he accepts PayPal payments through the checking accounts only.

I really don't know how your friend would go about this since he has already made the payment through his credit card. The only thing I can suggest for your friend is to contact Paypal and the seller to see how this can be resolved since payment has been made by CC.

Yes, this person has a regular paypal account. They can only accept payments with funds already in your paypal account. They could accept credit cards but they need to upgrade to a premier account. The catch is once you upgrade to premier, paypal takes a percentage of each payment made to your account. Basically, the seller is too cheap to upgrade
They should have specified in their auction that they only take paypal funded payments.

Yes, I does sound right to me too(--NOT the part about Paypal taking THEIR extra 2 cents though!! ARRRGHHHHHH!!!!) But anymore, your friend is right, to question things on the internet. There are a LOT of scammers out there! I did get a scam email both from Ebay AND Paypal within a month's time, asking me to use the link they provided in their email, to re-enter my credit card info and my other personal info, as my "time limit" on when I had registered these things, was up. It said, if I didn't do this immediately, I would lose my user-name AND my good ratings at Ebay. Well, I forwarded them BOTH on to Ebay Fraud because they will tell you ALL the time there, NEVER to enter personal info through an Email link--that they will NEVER email you and ask you for personal info!! So we ALL have to be careful on the internet, as there are a LOT of dishonest people, sadly enough!

That's entirely honest, however most sellers put in their auctions that they only take Paypal from an account and not from CCs. Mine can come from either because I have both linked, but it does cost extra for the ability to take a CC payment (I wouldn't be able to do that with my account, but then I also only buy stuff).

Exactly.

Luckily I have not received a spoof email yet, but if I did I'd know exactly what not to do and what to do with it!

I recently started selling on ebay and that happened to me. I sold something and wasn't aware that I couldn't take credit card payments without paying more. I just ended up upgrading because I didn't want to ask the buyer to change his payment. It did kind of suck because I didn't realize credit card payments were different and the item I sold was only a few dollars so I ended up making even less. Next time I'll specify if I don't want to accept a CC payment. Maybe I'll set a $10.00 limit or something. The thing that kind of bothers me is that ebay and Paypal are jointly owned. So they are nickel and dimeing us poor saps to death! It's not bad unless the thing your selling is only a few bucks.

Yeah.... I'm cheap!

Its legit, Deb.

Just tell them to upgrade to a premier acct ( although paypal does take a fee to let you accept cc payments).

He should have stated that in the auction though, thats what 'good' sellers do.

From what I read in this guy's feedback, I believe this is his first selling experience. All of his feedback has been as a buyer. So I am assuming that he didn't think ahead enough to state that in the auction. Oh well, I guess we will see if his item is as good as it sounds...... I really want to thank all of you for the replies. When my friend emailed me the question last night, I felt like I knew immediately where to go for an answer. Thank God Al Gore invented the internet!
