Our cat is a 5 year old neutered male, and he has recently had some urinary tract/bladder troubles going on. In the past month or so, he has had bouts of painful urinating, bloody urine, etc. He went to the vet for antibiotic shot (Convenia), anti-inflammatory shot, and some pain meds to last a couple days, and seemed to perk up! After a couple weeks, his pain while using the litter box returned, and become even worse, to crying and hissing while urinating. Had to take him to emergency clinic one week ago now where he was rehydrated and unblocked with catheter. Had a ton of bacteria in urinanalysis and lots of crystals. He has been home for 5 days now, with Clavamox, Prazosin, and some Onsior earlier. He is one Hillls c/d prescription wet food, and we have Feliway diffuser going just in case. He seems much more happy and comfortable, close to his usual self, yet he is still not urinating normally. He begins, can only release a bit at a time, but then cannot seem to stop, and walks around the house, going in little puddles in different places. He does not look to be straining like before; he is not crying or hissing like before, nor is his urine bloody or cloudy. Would his inability to let it all go at once (like our other cat, who sounds like a waterfall!!) be more likely caused from another blockage forming or inflammation? We're anxious to get these crystals dissolved --we'll be getting a follow-up urinanalysis in the next few days to see how this all is going, but is there any other advice out there to help him loosen up in the meantime?

Hi

C/D is a maintenance diet for cats with crystals, S/D is a temporary diet that is designed to dissolve crystals.  I would discuss with your vet a course of treatment with S/D food.  It can take a while and a lot of work to fully resolve this condition....

Thanks a lot for your advice, Stephen! Had a follow-up with vet today, and urinanalysis showed little bacteria and crystals, so it didn't seem to be a concern to the doctor. I think he thinks it might be more of an inflammation problem, so he's back on a 3-day round of Onsior, which after his first dose today, he is so active, alert, and comfortable. Seems like a wonder drug! We also got a refill for Prozasin and some Buprenex. Going to continue with the s/d diet, since crystals weren't nearly as numerous as before....I'm just concerned that after his Onsior is done in a couple days, he will be uncomfortable again and not happy going to the litter box. Most of all, really hoping that he doesn't block again....
